Sounds like you have HYDROLOCKED your motor. Either drain the oil, and put fresh in it and try to crank it. OR you will have to buy a new motor. :( Hope this helps, James Booth

I have a 1998 ford contour and the engine temp. gauge isn't working how do I fix it?

The easiest thing to do would be change the sending unit on the motor. If you go to a place like NAPA they will sell you one and also tell you where it is on the motor. If that doesn't fix the problem I would look over the wiring coming off of the sensor and see if anything is cut, or has a abrasion and grounding out. If that is all ok. Then you make be forced to change out your instrument cluster. Please rate my answer so I am rewarded points for it.

Lift the car on the side you need to work by using the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under the Ford near the jacking point and raise it so the jack stand can be placed under the frame.

Does changing the oil on a 1998 Ford Contour require any special treatment?

No, none whatsoever. Just drain the oil, oil the filter gasket, and install a new quality filter such as Motorcraft, Bosch, or Purolator. Pour in the correct amount of the correct weight oil and you are done.

My 1998 contour svt has been sitting for two years, trying to start car, it wont..is the gas bad in the tank

If it's been sitting for that long, yes the gas goes bad. Drain the tank, fuel lines and even the spark plugs becuase the old gas will foul them too.
Check air filter for free air flow and possible critters living in the intake... two years is quite a while for a car to sit... Also after it's running have your oil and filter changed as well.
