Question about 2000 Chevrolet Blazer

Just changed rear pads and rotors on my 2000 chev blazer..after test driving rear brakes were hot and smoking...brake pads seem to be sticking..are the calipers shot or do I need hoses or both?

  • Well when you looked at the brake pads after your drive were the pads stuck to the rotor?
  • First thing to do is double check your pad and rotor installation.
  • Also check to make sure the right parts were installed.
  • When you pushed back the pistons on your calipers did they flow back nice and smooth? Did they wedge in and get stuck? This would make the pads drag.
  • If you used grease did you get some on the pad by accident? If this is the case it will burn off.

  • How is the car stopping for you? Properly? Do you hear any grinding while driving slow? While driving fast? Over heating rotors will turn a bluish stain. That is when it is really time to be worried.
  • If your brakes are not dragging then give some time for the pads to ware in.
  • If the piston is stuck forcing the pads against the rotor all the time then you need to replace the calipers.
  • Don't forget to bleed the lines afterword.

Think you didnt let the handbrake cable right off when you done it ,depends on rear brake layout ,now is this vehicle using a shoes indie the rear disk or is the handbrake cable running to the caliper?' if so release the cable as i think its been overtightened

Will wraped brake rotors cause them to get hot


sounds like they a warped because they got hot are these the rear rotors ? i would check for collapsed rubber lines, sticking calipers, sticking pads in the mounting brackets frozen e-brake cable the same can be checked on the front minus the e-brke cable

2002 Ford Excursion 7.3 4x4 rear brakes getting smoking hot. Noticed it on driver side first. Assumed the rotor was sticking, replaced it and the hose. Relaxed pads and found the pads on passenger side...


There are a number of issues that can cause overheating disc brakes. Disc brakes, when released, separate from the disc by the action of the rotor moving between them (since no rotor is perfectly true, there is a small about of wobble and it pushes the pads away from the rotor surface). Things that can cause this to go wrong are:

  1. Caliper pistons that have rust rings that cause sticking. This most often will happen right after or shortly after replacing old, work out pads with new ones. Because the caliper piston was extended out farther with the worn pads, its surface may get rusty. This rust can cause sticking when the piston is pushed back into the bore with the new, thicker pads.
  2. Caliper slide bolts will rust and get sticky, not allowing the caliper to release properly and re-center itself on the rotor. What you often see here is that one pad (inner or outer) is totally worn out and the other seems normal.
  3. Rusty brake lines/caliper internals can cause restrictions in the flow of brake fluid and hold pressure after the brake pedal is released.
It is highly recommended that whenever you change your brake pads, you replace the caliper slide bolts use a new brake hardware kit when reinstalling. The additional cost is almost always saved in longer brake pad life, and fewer complications.

2000 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER BRAKE SMOKING. IVE CHANGED ROTOR,PADS,CALIPER AND BLED THE BRAKES. AFTER DRIVING FOR A WHILE THE BRAKES START SMOKING FROM NOT RELEASING.


possible the master cylinder is not allowing the brakes to release all the way. also did you check the slider bolts on the brakes to make sure there not binding? if there new or all the brakes are smoking i would lean towards the master cylinder

My rear brakes are getting way too hot on my 2000 Chevy Silverado. What could be causing this? I just replaced the brake pads and rotors. The back brakes seem to be seizing up and I can't figure out why.


This year of truck did have issues with rear disc brakes. Quality of pads is extremely critical. Go with the AC Delco pads and rotors to eleviate some of the issue. Make sure that the slide pins are liberally lubricated and move freely or drag will cause excessive heat to occur. Let me know if you need anything else.

Unusual brake wear


The two different styles/designs may be part of your ware problem, they may not be made of the same material and maybe warring fastest but I fear that you could have a caliper hanging up. I would go head and install the new bushings in that caliper, so you know they are good and not sticking, with the rest of the brakes all put back together. Press your brake pedal down hard with the rear wheels jack up on stands. Place the shifter in neutral see if you can turn both back wheels fairly easily, the left rear maybe sticking or hanging up. If you don’t find anything, try driving it till you feel it pulling again. Come back and jack it back up, check it again it may have to get hot to act up. If it is hanging up it probable would will not be hard to fine the wheel that is hanging up will be hard to turn. You will feel the drag on it and you may hear it on the rotor. When you release the brake pedal the pads should return far enough to create a little space between the pad and the rotors letting it turn freely.

1999 Chev Blazer 6cyl 4.3L 4WD Rear Brake assy - I have replaced 2 Brake Pads and Rotor. After replacing and a test drive... Its making a scrapeing noise and now the rotor is extreamly hot and descolored....


I replaced the rotors and pads on my right hand drive Blazer and had the same problem ,dont worry in a couple of days normal running the pressure goes away and you dont get the heat problem.
Its just the new pads bedding in.

Rear disc brakes freezing up


Master cylinder may be bad or most likley air in the lines---bleed the brakes.
