If the oil is on top of the plug, your valve cover gasket is leaking. (easy fix). If the oil is on the bottom of the plug (on the screw threads) you have a problem. It could be a burnt valve, blowed piston ring, or even a head gasket. Please let me know more info on EXACTLY where the oil is coming from. Hope this helps, James Booth

Seems like you replaced everything on the ignition but the cap. Sounds like a good place to look to me.
Look for burn marks around contacts.

2003 tdi, 54 k miles, bought car new, had manifold cleaned, new glow plugs and harness. car has been driven only short commutes for 3 years. Heavy blue smoke at startup, then it clears right up. No...

valve seals are going. when car sits excess oil gets past the valve seals then when you staRT up it burns the oil off then runs fine and no more blue smoke. It is fine to run like that had the same in a dodge caravan 1996 6cyl. ran another 100 000 km. and still ran fine got rid of it for other reasons.

Runs rough

It sounds like the head has developed a crack between 2&3 or 3&4, and will rqeuire replacing. Either go to toyota for a new one or go to a reputable brakers yard to get a reclaiamed one. Before you do any of this, get a pressure check done on all piston chambers, to check it is the block or a worn piston, which is easier to repair. I know it sounds daft, but you may be better getting another engine from a breakers yard, it will probably be cheaper than messing about, with bits and peices! bes of luck. Let me know. Dave!

Check for bad spark plug wires or wires connected to the wrong cylinder.

Could be head gasket or piston rings. Piston ring issues will smoke under load or when revving the engine.

Do a compression test.
