I should not try to answer this as I have never seen the inside of a 2001 740 trunk but..........
I am pretty certain that you will need to pull up the trunk lining and it won't be easy. If you want to do this without damaging the lining, you will probably need to remove other parts, such as the rear deck speakers and likely the rear seat back, to get the lining out.
Or you can just take a box cutter to the lining at the top of the shock tower and glue it back when you are done. Much quicker.
How much do you care about how the inside of the trunk looks? Getting the rear speakers out of a 10-year-old BMW without damaging the speaker grills is tricky as well, and I would be a lot more worried about the appearance of my speaker grills than my shock towers.

I have a 2001 BMW 740IL and would like to change my front struts from EDC to regular struts. Is this possible?

Yes, but you must do all not just fronts. Talk to a couple of tire shops & service centers that do strut work it can get pretty difficult if you don't have tools like spring compressor & air tools.

2001 Grand Prix SE 3.1V Struts / Replacement

Hello Struts!!!!
In response to your question regarding the is not necessary to replace the whole strut and spring assy when servicing a weak strut...unless the coil spring itself is incredibly weak or broken. You can remove the struts yourself and take them down to any auto repair shop so they can safely decompress the spring and install new struts.Be sure to inspect or replace your strut mounts with this same movement also. They become dry and start o crack with age and time. These are rubber mounted...that's why they tend to crack with time.If you have any other oncerns you are more than welcome to get a hold of me..HOPE I COULD HELP!!!

93 Camry strut replacement.

If you plan on keeping the car, it's always a good idea to replace the seats/bearings when you do the struts - having to replace them afer is a pain. If you mean should you replace the strut lower bushings, yes, definitely.

Hope this helps :)

How to install rear hatch door struts on a 97Astrovan

in case you havent figured it out, or for the next person that needs help. . .

i needed to replace my rear window struts.
i stuck a flathead screw driver in each of the metal clips at each end of the strut and pryed them loose. the struts popped right off the mounts. i also unscrewed the rear speaker panel so i could remove the wire connecting the strut to the car (rear defroster?) and remove completely. i wanted to take the whole unit to the autoparts store and compare it to the new strut. when buying replacements, i noticed the new struts did not come with the electrical housing on the upper end, just a male thread. i was stumped because i couldnt get the housing off of the old strut . . .i didnt want to damage it trying.

i finally i got the nerve. all it took was a pair of channel locks (pliers). grip the rod tight enough to unscrew the housing from the rod. after breaking loose, it should come right off easily.

i realized after that i didnt need to open the speaker panel and disconnect the wire. i probably could have just unhooked the strut and unscrewed the housing (while the wire remained connected to the van), screwed the new strut back into the housing, and reattached the strut to the van.

installation is the opposite of removal. i also read on a few sites that its a good idea to replace them both at the same time.
