1999 3.1l malibu after doing valve job the #5 cylinder reads 0 compression and the #1 compression reads 30. All of the cylinders specs are normal

Check the timing marks from your crankshaft. And then on your camshafts

We have a 2003 F250 thats running on 6 of 8 cylinders. My husband changed spark plugs & did compression tests. He got 0 on cylinders 2&6. Anyone have advice on what to look for next?

0 compression doesn't make any sense. it could be valves compression Rings or head gasket. I've never heard a cylinder getting 0 compression. I would do another compression test and double check it

What causes misfires?

If the misfire is on one a particular cylinder or perhaps 2, these issues need to be addressed and checked...
1. Power to the spark plug.
2. Coils and spark plug condition.
3. Fuel supply to the cylinder
4. Air supply to the cylinder
5. Correct fuel/ air mixture to the cylinder
6. Cylinder compression. Low compression or a cylinder compression level below spec will result in a misfire. If the compression tester shows low compression in a cylinder the causes of the poor compression reading then need to be addressed.

The fault codes generated by the computer and read by an appropriate scanner will tell you which cylinder or cylinders are misfiring.

I have a 88 b2200. It shudder, jumps in all gears, has power loss and gains and poor milage. I've rebuilt carb, changed plugs and wires, disributer and pvc valve. Any ideas. Thanks

I would do a compression test of the engine. Spend about $40 for the gauge tester and do it yourself. Engine should be at operating temperature, remove all spark plugs, disable ignition by grounding the high tension cable from coil to distributor, screw in the gauge to one cylinder, hold the gas pedal to the floor-or hold the throttle at wide open, then crank engine for about 5 seconds. You will have a compression reading that should be somewhere between 100 psi and 200 psi. Anything below 100psi means not enough compression in the cylinder to produce power when running. Do each cylinder the same-crank the same amount of time for each cylinder( with wide open throttle). All compression readings should be fairly close-lowest reading must be within 75% of highest reading cylinder for a good, healthy engine.

If compression is low in any cylinder, it probably won't even fire the air/fuel mixture. Look for valve problems, valves not sealing (burnt valves cause this), or piston rings worn too bad, head gasket failure can cause low compression. Example, compression tested a Nissan, and readings were all 155-160 psi in all cylinders, so compression was excellent, engine was internally good. If you have good compression in each cylinder, look elsewhere like a plugged catalytic converter-won't let the engine breathe, or a problem with the ignition system-test for a snapping, blue spark when cranking the engine, on one of the spark plug wires. Others: check EGR valve for being stuck open, good luck, then.

The head on the motor you bought is bad; or the head gasket is leaking; or the rings in the 2 center pistons are bad. 30 lbs is far too low of a compression, and 5 lbs is garbage. They should be closer to 80 or 90 psi and not have more that 5% variance between the cylinders.
The first thing you will have to do is pull the head off and check it. Or you can take it back to the salvage yard you got it from, show them the results from the compression test and either get another motor, or have them refund your money.

Popping on acceleration

It could be a problem in the valve train. For a car that old, before putting new parts in, you could buy a compression tester for about $30, and do your own compression test. It should tell you if the engine is good enough internally to warrant proceeding. If compression is low on any cylinders, that problem must be addressed first. If a valve is not sealing and causing the popping, that cylinder will show low compression.
For the test, the engine should be at normal operating temperature. Then pull all the plugs out, connect tester to #1 spark plug hole. Have a helper hold the throttle wide open while cranking the engine over about 5 seconds. Watch the gauge-the first revolution or two will cause the gauge to jump high at first, and successive revolutions during the 5 second span will cause the needle on gauge to climb a little each time. Record or note the compression on #1, then do each cylinder. Try to do the same amount of cranking on each cylinder, and keep the throttle wide open. What you want are compression readings on each cylinder that is well above 100 psi, and all should be close. The lowest reading should be within 75-85% of the highest reading cylinder. Example: say your highest reading is 135 psi. 85% of 135 is 115-so your lowest reading should be at least 115 psi. Some general guidelines: any cylinder with compression below 100 psi is definitely a problem-that cylinder will not have hardly any power output, even if it is firing. Worn piston rings or poor valve sealing is causing compression loss. A newer engine should have compression readings above 150 psi. As the engine wears, compression will drop. In general, for high mileage engines, you would want to see compression in the range of 125-150 psi, the higher the better, but remember, it should be balanced-the lowest should be at least 75% of the highest reading cylinder.

How good a mechanic are you? Do you have the tools?
When you crank it, does it sem to spin real free with no wump wump sound? Then it's likely busted timing belt.
The 2.4 Liter engine is an interference motor, meaning if the timing belt breaks, the intake and or the exhaust valves in the engine hit the top of the piston and damage the valves. When this happens the valves are bent enough that they will not close tight and the engine will not start,, now it may sound like it wants to start because there maybe only a few valves that are bent, and in the cylinders that have the bent valves there is no compression, but in the other cylinders the valves are working normal and these cylinders may try to start like normal. The only trouble is the only way to correct this problem is to remove the cylinder head and have a machine shop inspect cylinder head and replace the valves that are damaged. The top of the pistons that are hit by the valves should also be inspected as pistons maybe damaged as well. You can verify a no compression condition by removing spark plugs and with a compression gauge, check the compression of each cylinder, the ones with no compression more than likely will be the ones that have the bent valve problem, on most four cylinder engines there will be two cylinders without compression, the other two cylinders may have a normal compression reading.

Broken or worn compression rings and faulty valves are normally the cause of low compression. I would suggest you take the vehicle to a larger reputable company for a second opinion to start with.

You need to have the rings replaced. Do the compression check again on a cold motor with this exception, add a small amount of oil to each cylinder. First do the test on the cylinder and record the pressure then add a small amount of oil and redo the test and compare the compression. I am attempting to identify if the problem is rings, valves or head gasket. I am concerned about cylinder 1. The compression is within range however the readings you provided indicate uneven compression. If after you add the oil the pressure evens out across the cylinders the problem is rings. If you get the same readings during both test the problem is the Head Gasket or a need to have a valve job done. The fouling is caused by oil getting past the rings or seals. Use regular oil in this test preferably in a hand oiler. Two to three squirts should be enough. DO NOT USE WD40 OR OTHER SPRAY LUBRICANTS. Those will damage your cylinder walls.

low compression in one cylinder usually indicates a bad exhaust valve. Low compression in two adjacent cylinders typically means you have a bad head gasket. Low compression in all cylinders would tell you the rings and cylinders are worn and the engine needs to be overhauled. If compression is low in one or more cylinders, you can isolate the problem to the valves or rings by squirting a little 30 weight motor oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and repeating the compression test. The oil temporarily seals the rings. If the readings are higher the second time around, it means the rings and/or cylinder is worn. No change in the compression readings tells you the cylinder has a bad valve. have a good day!

4.3 Liter V-6 Idles rough when in gear, runs fine on highway.

Can you check fuel trims at idle and under load?
If fuel trim is high at low speed and load, look for a vacuum leak.
If fuel trim is high at high speed and loads, look for fuel volumn problem or restriction.
If fuel trim is high at all speeds and loads look for pcm input fault, maybe a maf sensor problem?
If fuel trim is negative low speed and load, look for fuel pressure regulator or injector leak. If fuel trim is negative at all speeds and loads check ect and iac.

If you have the spider fuel system, that system is noted for problems. key on engine off, 60--66 psi fuel pressure.
