Sounds like your belt is going bad. Prop the hood and see where it is coming from. If it's coming from the belt area, then it's either a belt, or a pulley. Hope this helps. James Booth

A squeal in the motor could be several differant things depending on where it is in the motor if its coming from the back my guess would be a timing chain issue but that would be more of a clanking sound if its coming from the top end my guess would be a piston ring that broke and is scouring the wall of the cyc.

2000 montero sport: There's a loud squealing noise coming from the engine. What could be wrong?

Squealing is most common with loose or worn belts, I would start by replacing the drive belt on the front of the motor and go from there, Its easier to troubleshoot a squealing motor if you know that the belt or belts are good.

Loud squeal when I drive.

You need new brake pads . it has a metal tip that squeals on the rotor when they are worn.

Van brakes squeal/whistle even when stopped

Sounds to me like a dry, loose or worn serpentine belt. With the motor idling, lightly spray the serpentine belt as it's spinning with WD-40 or other oil based lubricant (Don't spray near the alternator). If this doesn't work, turn the mortor off and check the tension and for cracks or worn spots. The brakes will not squeal when you are completely still.
