There is a problem if you leave a check engine light on to long there is what techs call. Check light burn in the code get burn in to momery. first have a code check due fix the basic line problem if you have done that you will need a new computer ECM

Trust me it is quite an excercise and not worth doing yourself. With the proper tools, a hoist and a my mate who is a Guru Subaru Mech it took 4 hours. Without having done it before and without the Hoist ( which is wha I was going to do initially ) I'd say you wouldn't get much change out of 8 - 12 hours.

Can't gaurantee it but the catalytic converter would be 1 thing to check. Had the same problem on a mondeo 3500rpm max and gutless as, I found the cat had fallen to bits and blocked the exhuast pipe loads of back pressure etc. hope this helps.

if by a/t you mean automatic transmission try a power purge transmission service it may have a filter sensor that is telling you to service soon

Have the computer scanned (see my tips and tricks section for a free way to do so - click my screenname and go to Tips and Tricks). There are either latent codes (codes which are set but are not tripping a check-engine light) or you have an issue with a readiness code.
Once the codes are scanned, post them here as a reply/comment and I can work with you on solving the issue.
