My cam belt has broken and caused a lot of damage to my engine.

In order to repair this damage, it will cost me more than what the car is worth.

Apparently, this engine is noted for this kind of problem. Why wasn't

there a recall on this product?

Depends if the valves has hydraulic valve lashes. if not, it will definitely cause damage to your engine. if the timing belt breaks it will leave the valves open and the pistons will rise and impact those valves which can bend the valves and also ur cam.

It seems to me that if the belt breaks , even on an interference engine: the valves will slam shut . Maybe it 50/50 chance either way.

belt has to be replaced any way
compression test on the cylinders.. tells you straight away
zero or low compression numbers ..valves bent

in an interference engine OHC or DOHC belt breaks
the cams stop dead and pistons continue to move up and down

non interference there is a gap between pistons and valves

How do i do valve timing from scretch after timing belt broke on a volvo t5,2.3l s60

If the belt broke while the motor was running, the motor is likely badly damaged since, I believe, the five cylinder Volvo engines are "interference engines". The crankshaft and pistons keep moving while the car is in gear and still moving, but the valves stop dead the instant the timing belt breaks. The pistons would have hit some of the valves, cracking or badly damaging the cylinder head and some pistons. If the motor is not damaged internally, though, just line up the timing marks on the cam shaft sprockets and the crankshaft sprocket and put on a new belt. Go online for a diagram of how to align the timing marks.

Timing belt limp home mode

If the timing belt breaks the engine will not run! the timing belt is what keeps the crank and cams in "time" if the belt breaks the crankshaft can no longer turn the cams which will not allow fuel to get in, exhaust to get out, or compression to occur.

What happens if the timing belt breaks

The engine will stop running.
The 4 cyl turbo and 6 cyl engines are interference engines, which means the valves could be damaged if the cam stops and the pistons keep going.

My car was running just fine all day long and then it just stop running while i was driving they tryed the cam senser and the crank senser but that was not it now they are saying its the cam belt its broke...

If a cam or better known as timming belt breaks in any engine, it will stop right then. re-time engine and install new belt and away you go, it is a bigger process then that, i just simplified it. the person who told you about blowing up engine is refering to weather or not your engine is free-spinning or not. you see as an internal combustion engine runs, pistons go up and down and valves open and close very fast and when belt breaks the valves stop moving and pistons keep moving, if motor is whats called free-spinning the valves and pistons dont touch if your engine is not free-spinning the pistons smack the valves and thats what will damage engine beyond just a timming belt. I do not know if your engine is or is not free-spinning. I would call a couple of enigne machine shops and ask them this question before you spend any money on towing or diagnostics.

1988 daewoo leganza broke a cam shaft belt , would this have caused the valves to be damaged , or do they miss getting hit by trhe pistons ?

Yes you are correct when the timing belt breaks most of the time the valves will be damaged on overhead cam engines. I dont believe its possable for the pistons to hit the valves though. The valves get bent because the cam stops turning but the crank does not. The pressure is what bends them. Hope this helps:)

If the belt is turning the bottom and top end in time,no problem.Break a belt and the top end stops with the some valves open and some closed, meantime the bottom end keeps going around and around and the pistons up and down until the engine not only quits but continues until the vehicle is either put in neutral or until it comes to a stop, either way the damage is dune with-in the first seconds of the belt breaking, sorry for the news but this is true of all overhead valve engines.

Timing belt

not to worry. if timing belt broke your engine is fine. it is an overhead cam engine. although there is a good chance depending on your motor size. that one of the composite sprockets the belt runs on broke also. it is common.
