Question about Hyundai Motor 2002 Sonata

Open Question

Engine will not idle after refuelling

First problem of restricted refilling was solved by replacing the charcoal vent.

Second problem; after refuelling the engine will not start unless I press the gas pebble to the floor and hold it there and after the engine starts it will not idle until I have run the car to a speed of 40-60km for about 2 minutes.

Engine light is on with code :P0446 & P0441.

Is there a second vent and where is it located??

P0441 is Evap Emission Incorrect Purge Flow; the repair you are describing is easy, and should correct the P0441 restricition...I would anticipate no large problems.

SOURCE: 2003 toyota Matrix code p0441 and p0446...need help

p0441 - Evaporative emission control system Incorrect purge flow. can be caused by a lot of things and is usually related to a small leak in the emission control evap system, try replacing the gas cap and see if it helps, if not, the system needs to be tested for a leak with the scantool or a leak tester or both.
usually you will see p0440 p0441 and p0446 together but before anything replace your gas cap and besure to tighten it down when you gas up the vehicle, 90% of the time with those codes either a loose gas cap of bad gas cap gasket is the problem

Otherwise - Might be a canister leak, defective VSV valve or hoses, bad gascap seal.

I believe those cades are for the transmission. Call the dealership and verify but I am almost positive those are transmission fault codes.

Questions about refueling problems asked earlier after filler tube replacement also changed vent tube valve only thing haven't tried is charcoal canister

run the fault codes as the problem is more than likely the purge valve or vent solenoid of the EVAP system

When I put gas in the tank, the pump cuts off several times like its full which it isn't. Any idea what causes that.

The vent valve is stuck closed or you have a pinched hose . It has to do with the Evaporative emission's system ! There is a charcoal canister under the vehicle that stores gas fumes and a vent valve that allows the air in the tank to escape while fueling the vehicle, an during use fuel expands an the fuel vapors get stored in the charcoal canister an at times the engine control module turns on a purge solenoid that is connected to a engine vacuum supply allowing the fuel vapors to drawn into the engine to be burned ! Having problems filling the fuel tank on my 2001 hyundai elantra. Any solutions?

Common code you have there. My 2001 Elantra has kicked at least one if not both several times. The simplest trick is to get the cap tighter. Turn it till it clicks, then lean into it and see if you can get a few extra clicks. Ever since I've done this I haven't gotten these codes. Once you've done that, you can remove the battery cable for 30 minutes and then reinstall. The check engine light should be off then, but of course now you'll have to reset your clock and radio. This car is getting older, so it could very well be that something much larger is going wrong, so good luck and here's hoping!

P0450
- Faulty Evaporative Emission System (EVAP) Pressure Sensor
- Evaporative Emission System (EVAP) Pressure sensor harness is open or shorted
- Evaporative Emission System (EVAP) Pressure sensor circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)

P0446
- Missing Fuel cap
- Incorrect fuel filler cap used
- Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
- Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap
- Vent control valve harness is open or shorted
- Vent control valve circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty vent control valve

Having trouble filling the fuel tank. Pump shuts off every 10-15 seconds. Any suggestions?

First, This can be caused by trying to refuel with the engine running. If the engine was running when you were refueling, the evaporative emissions system could have been in PURGE mode at the time. This will cause the vent solenoid for your fuel system to be closed and the air trapped inside the fuel tank is what was causing your problem. If this is the case, shutting the ignition switch off when refueling will fix the problem.

Otherwise, the vent solenoid could be sticking or the charcoal canister could be saturated. The canister could be coming apart inside and clogging the vent solenoid with charcoal pellets. There are Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) covering this subject on several Ford models. However, I did not find any TSBs that apply directly to your model. So, to put it simply, your EVAP system as well as your fill tube should be checked for resrictions. If you did not try to refuel with the engine running, my bets are on a sticking vent solenoid valve.

2004 Hyundai Sonatai V6 hard to start after refueling...and stalls before it finally operates properly...Car has 100K milkes

You describe a purge control solenoid valve which has stuck "OPEN" (meaning it is continually applying a vacuum to the charcoal canister). When this happens, the engine computer cannot modulate the 'purge flow' from the charcoal canister. It is 'sucking' fumes continuously from the canister after refueling & is flooding the engine (excessive 'RICH' fuel condition).

Replace the PCSV (purge control solenoid valve).

1999 4Runner, Engine Check Light comes on related to quick stops and refueling. Replaced gas cap and 0-2 sensors several times. Never helps.

Stop spending money on replacement parts that are not bad to begin with. There is a vent tube off of your fuel tank that goes to a charcoal canister. This will located under the hood, typically towards the front of the vehicle. There is a solenoid that opens, and closes. Either this solenoid is stuck open, or there is a crack in the vent line that leads up to it. This will cause the low pressure in the tank, that is unless the tank happens to have a hole in it somewhere.

Car won't start right away after refueling

I just fixed a similar problem on a Toyota Corolla. I'm not certain if your car's EVAP system setup is the same, but this could resolve your problem as well. Your car may have one or both: A refuel check valve, and/or a fuel cutoff valve. Generally these are located off of the fill tube, but the cutoff valve may be mounted on the fuel tank. 01e0b34.jpg
The problem occurs when your fuel tank is overfilled and/or gas flows into the EVAP line. The gas is too high in the filler neck thereby causing fuel to flow into the charcoal canister. A defective refuel and/or fuel cutoff valve would cause this problem. The cutoff valve prevents fuel from flowing into the canister, and the refuel valve helps to trigger the gas pump to stop.

Test refuel check valve (if installed) by blowing air from larger to smaller port. Air should not flow freely and the valve should open as pressure increases. Air should flow freely when blowing from smaller to larger port. Replace valve if it fails either test.

Test the fuel cutoff valve by holding it upright, as installed on car; air should flow freely. Turning upside down should prevent airflow. Also, fuel present in the check valve may indicate the tank was over filled meaning you possibly have fuel in your charcoal canister.

Is your engine warning light on? For the Toyota, code P0441 "Incorrect Purge Flow" was present. Just replacing a defective valve may not get rid of the code. It's possible that your charcoal canister was saturated with gasoline too so that may need to be replaced. I also heard of a situation where the fuel tank was contaminated and had to be cleaned.

Replacing the cutoff valve solved my problem. Good luck! Related Link: http://www.2carpros.com/forum/1998-toyota-corolla-vt190664.html
