You need to clean the engine and then run the vehicle while watching the area. The most common failure is the oil sending unit located near the oil filter. I have also seen a leak develop between the oil pump housing, which is mounted directly behind the hamonic balencer and the engine block.

How to change your oil in 3 easy steps

(1) Getting Ready When getting ready, it is important to have the right tools and materials on hand, such as jack stands, a socket set and an oil drain pan. Let your Car engine run for 10 minutes before you drain the oil since warm oil is easier to drain than cold. Make sure you park on a level surface or, if your car has a low clearance, jack it up or drive it onto a ramp. If youre jacking up the car, use two jack stands instead of one. check the type of filter you need against the make and model of your vehicle

(2) Draining the Oil and Changing the Oil Filter To drain the oil, crawl under the car and look for the oil drain plug under the engine near the front of the car. Position your pan beneath the plug then use a socket or spanner to loosen the plug, turning counterclockwise. Once loosened, you can use your hand to remove the plug and the hot oil starts pouring out. Make sure all the old oil is drained into the pan. Once its completely drained, wipe the drain plug and the plug opening. Now replace the drain plug gasket and use a wrench to reinstall the plug but dont make it too tight.

Next, look for the oil filter. They are usually at the side of the engine. Place the oil pan beneath the filter in case any oil remains. Unscrew the oil filter (use gloves if it is too hot) and wipe the filter area clean, especially where it mounts to the engine. Dab a bit of your new oil on the rubber seal of the new filter and then screw it in by hand. You dont have to use a filter wrench to tighten the oil filter.

(3) Installing New Oil Remove the oil filler cap thats located at the top of the engine. Position the funnel at the opening and slowly start pouring in the new oil You might want to check your manual for the proper oil capacity but, typically, you will need three or four litres of oil. Once youre done, put back the oil filler cap. Start the engine, let it run for a minute and then check the dipstick. If you need to, add more oil. Now check for any leaks near the oil drain plug and the filter. If you do find leaks, simply tighten the plug or oil filter.

Youre done.

My car is leaking oil. i dont know if its the oil pan or the oil filter came loose? need to know where the oil filters located.

if it leaves small spots the chances are its the pan gasket but the oil filter should be located up in front of the engine on the right hand side... depending on the size of motor

u might check that the oil filter gasket did not slip when it was put on and have the oil running down over the pan . this car is not known to have oil leak problems.if i am thinking right it has a 3.4 liter and they are known (like there cousin the 3.1 )to leak anti-freeze from the intake gasket.

SCREW OIL PAN DRAIN PLUG BACK IN PLACE DONT OVER TIGHTEN.THEN YOU REMOVE OIL FILTER USING OIL FILTER WRENCH BESURE MOVE DRAIN PAN TO CATCH OIL WHEN YOU REMOVE OIL FILTER.YOU NEED THE LARGE SOCKET OIL FILTER WRENCH USE A LONG 3/8 EXTENSION TO REMOVE OIL FILTER.WHEN OIL HAS DRAIN OUT AFTER REMOVING OIL FILTER WIPE OIL FILTER SEAL SURFACE WHERE OIL FILTER GOES TO WITH PAPER TOWEL.THEN YOU TAKE NEW OIL FILTER FILL IT WITH HALF OIL RUB OIL ON FILTER SEAL TO HELP IT SEAL BETTER.THEN YOU SCREW NEW OIL FILTER IN PLACE HAND TIGHT IT. The oil pressure sending unit screws into the engine block so you will need to look between the oil pan and the head.I suggest that you try tightening your oil filter first.

1993 chev. cavalier RS convt. has oil leak somewhere

this being a side mounted 3.1 liter (v6) the front of the engine would be on the right side of the car from the driver's perspective. if the oil is coming from that side cocentrate your pinpointin there, make sure it is not one of the valve cover gaskets and oil is running down from the top (common) and making pinpoiinting the leak difficult because it tends to spreak on its way down. Seals tand to leak more when the engine is running, so you may have to run it while parked for a little while and check for the leak. It may be the crankshaft seal if it is localized to below the crankshaft; Or if it is coming out of the timing cover then it may be the camshaft seal of the lower intake seal. Intake seal leakes are next to valve cover gasket leak the most common on those engine. Update us. Good luck.
