Likely one of the speed sensors on the trans, and depending on year of the vehicle, some of the 90's models had the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted on the transmission.

The transmission model in your car is dependent upon the engine. The two transmissions available are designated the AX4S and the AX4N.Ford had 2 different 3.0 liter engines, and one of the models had more power, and consequently used the slightly more heavy duty AX4N.I'm explaining this because where the speed sensors are located depends on the engine and specific trans in your car. Both trans models utilize an input speed sensor that is mounted on the trans case on the driver side, just slightly above the driver side axle where it goes into the trans channel plate. Both transmissions also carry an output speed sensor that are both mounted on the passenger side of the case. The preferred method for diagnosing the problem is a scan tool with a data stream. The data stream can be accessed real time live as the vehicle is being driven, the speed sensors can be looked at individually to see if they are indeed generating a speed signal. If they are both generating speed signals that the computer is seeing, then likely an intermittent problem,or it could be the speedometer head unit in the dash.Scan tool is really needed for an evaluation.

How do I fix speedometer that is stuck below zero?

dealer might be able to fix with the computer diagnostic tool. If there is a push button to reset odometer you can take a small wire and try and feed through the hole and raise needle above the pin. removing the instrument cluster cover is a pretty big task, if you cant find a place to insert a wire, only bypass I can suggest is drilling a tiny hole in the instrument cluster cover off to the side or top wherever the hole is least bothersome to you and then use a wire to raise above pin, after put a little clear silicone or a piece of tape over the hole to prevent dust building up inside the cluster

The symptoms you describe point to a loose or cracked speedometer cable. The cable likely needs to be replaced.

Speedometer went haywire and car stopped

define haywire.?

dead, off, and is odometer off too?
stopped, you mean the car stalled?

when the engine stalls you see the following (driving school 101)
1: quiet , now. from engine.
2: steering and braking get harder. up to 6 times harder.
3: RPM tachometer shows 0 RPM.
4: Speed drops and lands on zero as car stops or you run out of down hill free right.

so did engine stall? does it restart,?

MY SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE IS STICKING WHEN I STOP IT STILL SHOW SPEED I WAS GOING..THEN IT START WHERE IT STOP INSTEAD OF GOING TO ZERO

If there is no malfunction with any of the other gauges, then this is probably a faulty servo motor in the speedometer needle. You will probably have to replace the entire gauge cluster. This is likely a dealer part and possibly a dealer repair, since you will be tampering with the odometer.

It is certainly your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). It's cheap on eBay. Easy to do yourself too.

Speedometer - 40MPH

the speedo is electronic, not cable, this problem is caused by a sticking stepper motor that moves the needle, a stepper motor is a miniature electric motor that can move and hold one position, this was a common problem at the dealer I worked at, u will need to pull the speedo and send it out for repair, I use the following link for this service.

When i accelarate the speedometer goes to 35 mph and stops. the faster you go, the speedometer drops below 35 mph.

the sppedometer gets a signal from the vehicle speed sensor in the transmission. The speedo cluster then converts that signal nd sends it to the speedo & odometer and to the enine computer. I suspect you have a bad speedo head. Does the odomter record correctly?

Buy a used speeo on Ebay for a good price. Analog (needle) or digital (numbers)?
