if a gas engine, check spark.
if spark is good try test fuel
if test fuel fails, its compression test time.

I think im missing 1st and or 2nd gear but it started happening out of the blue. Transmission has been excellent until this happened.

Check the following first:

1) Spark plug condition
2) Spark plug lead condition (replace if around 4-5 years old)
3) Condition of coil(s)
4) Condition of air filter.
5) Condition of fuel filter.
6) Gearbox oil level and colour (anything brownish in colour should be replaced)

My 89 ford bronco 2 wont start, and it smells like gas when I try to start it.

Hi Tyler, As the vehicle stood for a few years before you bought it, and you have had it running, remove the spark plugs one at a time and squirt two times with an oil can into each combustion chamber. When you fit back the last plug, crank the engine. Make sure the battery is in good condition and is fully charged. The addition sealing properties of the oil should help raise the compression to start it. Once it has started leave it idling for some time or better still take it for a good run. If the problem of starting persists, you may be looking at an engine rebuild as the rings may be damaged. A good check is to do a compression test and observe any great difference between the cylinders. If you notice low readings, squirt some oil into the chambers as described earlier and if the reading increases it is a sign of piston ring wear. If the reading remains the same but low, there is a good chance that the valves are leaking and that you will need to do a head job on your machine. Regards John

Cylinder #5 excessive miss fire. Numerous causes:
Bad spark plugs, wrong spark plugs, worn cam lobe, bad injector, bad wiring from PCM to injector, vacuum leak or lean condition, bad spark plugs wires, cap rotor, low compression, stuck/sticking valve, broken valve spring, MAP sensor. To much to discuss without more details....

1996 ford full size bronco, 302 engine, starts and runs fine, under power it bucks and misses and has no power. let off gas and is ok again. A test shows a misfire on the #4 cylinder. The plugs, wires and...

Is this a 4.9L engine? An inline 6? My database doesn't show a 4.9L in that model year. It does show that engine in 95.
Did you visually check for spark at number 4 cylinder?
For 95-- 4.9L--fuel pressure--50--60 psi. Use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Also, see if fuel pressure will hold for a bit with everything off.
Fuel--spark--compression. Some ford makes and models, ford can disable the fuel injector, if misfire is detected. I only mention this because, swapping injectors may not be conclusive? You can check for fuel injector pulse, anyway.
How long since over-all tune-up? You did get a new fuel filter, if inline filter, correct?

My 96 bronco 5.8 stumbles on acceleration.

Did it spark well on all the plugs? Usually if you have no change in idle with two wires removed it needs a new set of spark plug wires. If it was cylinder 2 & 3 (side by side) then you should suspect a head gasket. Does the Bronco have multiple coils or a coil pack with multiple inputs? Are these two plugs hooked up to one coil?
