Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

2002 v8 Explorer. Coils have been going out. I have had two replaced so far, but the labor to replace it is charged in a ddition to the diagnostics to findout which one it is resulting in a big chunk of change. I could easily swap the parts and save over a hundred bucks if I knew which one was now failing. How can I test each of the old coils to determine which one to replace?

There is a way to test them with an ohm meter, but if they fail when they get hot, the test won't always work. I usually pull plug wires and choose the one that makes no change when the wire is removed. But, it is still a little bit of a **** shoot.

If your coils/wires are on the correct cylinders then, with the truck running unplug your alternator if the truck runs smooth then you have a short inside the alternator causing change in electrical current, if this is case replace alternator.

That dtc (diagnostic trouble code) is a code reflecting a problem with the pressure control solenoid which sends pressure through the valve body and shifts gears you will need to have your transmission serviced by a transmission shop soon or it may get worse at any time

#4 coil needs replacing

here is what i remember ... there was a class action law suit against VW about the high failure rate of the coils especially for the 4 cyl cars with turbo ... VW lost and agreed to install heat shields around the coils ... not sure what years are involved but you might check with a VW dealer to see if you come under that agreement .. as i recall VW charged a fortune for the replacement coils and labor.. a few years ago you could expect a second coil to go bad and even a third or all eventually .. VW would only change one coil at at time when in warranty .... the replacement coil did not appear to be an improved version .. .. it looks like VW is obligated to install the heat shields on models included in the suit ..
