Question about 1988 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

Hi thought I would ask some experts for a bit of advice... I am having serious issues with my golf mk2, the windscreen wiper stopped working a while back, it was blowing fuses until it stopped working even with new fuses. We replaced the mfa arm with no effect and then the motor which did seem to work until the following day when it blew the fues again, changed the fuse and it has blown again. It has a toad cat 1 alarm which is also having problems, the full closure has stopped working so we have had to disconnect the drivers door so we can get in! (it is delocked), the windows dont close whent he alarm is activated as they should and the alarm has been going off with no reason whatsoever :{ Now, there is substantial damp in the car as the door seals need replacing (this is the only way water can get in, the sun roof did leak but that has been sealed) there was around 2" of water in the back foot well, drivers side after some heavy rain last week. I know it sounds like a right dog but it is my pride and joy and has been for six years now and I am loathed to give up on her..... Any advice would be welcomed

It is possible that you tightened the bolts for the arms themselves to much and it is to much resistance for the motor. Try loosening the bolts a bit and see if that helps. Aside from that make sure that you are getting a full 12V to the plug by testing it with a multimeter for DC Voltage. Hope this helps you.

How to check & change a wiper motor, and repair wiper mechanism on 2001 VW Golf

First time you must diagnose why windscreen wipers going slow and/or stopping.
In order to find out the cause of wipers stopping you can try follows:

1. Carefully extract the wiper arms from their axles (two pieces). In some cases you need to use an extracting tool. Heed of the windscreen !!!
2. Disassemble the plastic covers from the bottom of the windscreen.
3. With the bonnet up you can start the engine, (transmission in "N" or "P" position and parking brake on). Now you must switch on the control lever of the wipers, and go to the engine compartment. If the wiper motor runs let the wiper motor running for a few minutes and switch off. Go to the step 4. If the wiper motor do not runs you must check first the electrical feeding of the motor. If the electrical feeding is OK you must replace the motor - steps 5, 6. If not, you must check electrical connections, the control switch of wipers and harness.
4. Now you must check the two bearings of wiper mechanism with your hand. In the most cases the left bearing is out of order (is very hot). This is the most encounter fault of the wipers running.
5. You must disconnect the electrical coupling of the motor (difficult assurance), unscrew three bolts of the mechanism and extract together with the motor. You must move them slowly between windscreen and engine computer box until the wiper motor go out together with the mechanism. This is the most difficult operation!
6. Now you can repair the bearings, replace entire wiper mechanism or replace the wiper motor. It is not very simply, but it works.
Heed of the windscreen !!!
Refit all in reverse order.

Why my windscreen wipers on my polo stopping up on the windscreen

Your wiper has what is called a parking circuit, this sets the wipers to the bottom of the windshield when the power or ground is turned off, in order to fix this issue u will need to replace that part, it may be part of the wiper motor, not for sure on VW's.

VW Golf Windscreen Wiper

Sounds like the linkage part came off from the motor. You'll have to remove the 2 wipers arms and the plastic tray to inspect further.

Slow Windscreen Wipers

sound more like a motor problem. pop the bonnet and lube the linkage with a penetrating spray such as WD-40 and let it to soak in a while then run the wipers on slow and spray the linkage with it running.it should make it work a little bit faster by beginning and after a while it should be working well.
