Ford F250 heavy duty truck with 6.0 engine

When climbing mountains, truck will sputter and sound as if it is going to cut off. This truck has been in several service departments and nobody can find the problem. They say they have to hear what it is doing. Well, there are no mountains around here for them to test the truck. We are going camping soon (using fifth wheel trailer) and we are concerned about the mountains we must go over.

My 250 has the same problem--a sputtering or almost cutting out of the engine when climbing mountains. Around 2000 RPM--when I accelerate, the problem seems to go away. It's a small physical jolt like the engine is quitting as well as a coughing sound.

Is the sputtering actually the engine changing rpm or could you possibly be hearing turbo surge?

Engine sputters at low rpm, overheats at high rpm. towing a camper

if your towing it will heat up faster,, watch the rpm's ,, if you need to downshift during uphill climbs do so,, keep the RPM's a little higher than normal, as far as the sputtering,, that could also be due to the towing and extra weight on the motor,, it could be that some of the components are weak, and towing just makes you notice them more, check the cap for build-up on the contact points, and also, the rotor , depending on the miles already on your plugs they too could be at the end of their life cycle, with the over heating, make sure you have a good mix of antifreeze and water in the radiator, and make sure the fan is functioning properly

It sounds like you need a new flasher relay. You can get it at your local automotive store. Make sure you get one that is heavy duty enough. If you often tow a trailer with lights, you will want the heavy duty one.

Horribly cold in New Mexican mountains - ran engine block heater all night, started engine, idled in driveway for 20 minutes then drove approximately 1.5 miles - sudden loss of acceleration, followed by...

The thermostat is likley stuck open. that means that you are trying to warm the water in the engine block and the radiator also. With the thermostat closed before it allows the water in the block to heat up. When it reaches the desired temp for it to open it then will allow the water from the radiator to flow to the block thus regulating the temp in the block.

Engine dying

it sounds like the cam sensor (also called "crank sensor") needs to be replaced. Mine has gone out twice &i t's common. In fact, Ford has a recall on this item. To do it yourself, it costs about $30 at a parts store & takes about 15 minutes to replace. Very easy!
