indicates an vacuum actuator problem or TR sensor problem

run the fault codes and look for a problem TCM unit

the oD lamp doing that means scan me. on all cars..... use any scan tool of 1996 or newer. if not ,use the flash codes... ask.

This is the classic symptom of a vehicle with a failed torque converter lockup solenoid.
The lockup solenoid "locks up" the transmission to the drivetrain but only operates when the transmission progresses from first gear to second gear.

Use dexron 3 automatic transmission fluid.

1996 isuzu bighorn, diesel the engine check light comes on and when it does the rev counter stops working and engine runs rough and stalls

would sound as if the bands are slipping. a regular transmission service may suffice ,they change the fluid renew the filter and adjust the bands ,and i would think you will be out of trouble

Problem is the detent springs for 4/5 gear have gone weak .
If you are handy its take the top off the gearbox from inside the car and you will see the plug then the springs and balls .
If not its a transmission shop job.

Ok, The steering noise is either the power steering pump or belt! Check the fluid level first.
