Question about BMW 318

Have1995 bmw318ti 1.8. Engine spins but no spark. have replaced computer,cam and crank sensors and still no spark. car sat for a while may have got wet. Any thoughts?

Try maybe replacing the coil pack, they do tend to give problems.

No, to the second question- sensor won't make it crank any different. Faster than normal cranking often means a broken timing belt -less friction with the valve train not moving, so engine spins faster. But you have a timing chain, right? Any engine noise when it quit at 60mph? You could watch some valve action through the oil filler cap while the engine is being cranked, to make sure the timing chain is still intact.
If all is good, check for spark and gas to the engine. If stopped while running, it could be a failed fuel pump or a problem in the ignition system- cam or crank sensor, ignition coil, ignition control module, some of the things to check if no spark.

No spark but power to coil no spark out


at all 4 spark wire tips?, but what about the coil does it have spark ( there are 5 places to check for spark,not 4)
does the cam spin?, & run the belt over 60k miles.?
open oil cap filler, see cam, see it spin ,cranked?

Ill assume the cam spins and the COIL really is dead. below.....?
if the cam belt slips the coil makes spark perfectly but is now timed ALL WRONG.

This is a G16 engine, and the ECU makes the spark.
here are the steps.
1: fuses good, "FI" and IGcoil. both !!!
2: key on, CEL lamp must glow or ECU is dead, (see #1)
3: Insert diagnostic jumper and crank engine for 5 full seconds
bingo it tells you why there is no spark about 90% of time.
code 41 or 42 , that means the ECU knows why, it fails.
DTC flash codes (CEL lamp falshes)

CMP dead, due to cam belt snapped?
there is no CKP sensor until 1996 (usa EPA laws)
The ECU sees the CMP pulses and generates spark.
via the IGNITOR.

all 27 ways to not start.
but if the Ignition coil high voltage tower is dead, you need to use make sure cam spins and then the DLC jumper clip test.

Jeep cranks but does not start


Hi, First replace your plugs. Second check ignition coil(s) one maybe bad. replace with new. If all else is good, have your mechanic check the computer codes. (code scanner) Many of todays cars and trucks have computers to run and control the engine. (management system). Good luck

2006 nissan x terra. spins over, wont start. replaced fuel pump assembly, crank sensor, left side cam sensor. not getting any cranking rpm from scanner. HELP !


This already sounds all kinds of bad.
Lets start with spark. Did you verify it can make 30kv at all plugs while cranking? f you havent...start there. Do you have any codes in any modules? Engine, theft, trans, body?
Do you have vacuum cranking, do you have MAF reading cranking? do we know if its mechanically still in time? Did you do a cranking compression test? If you have spark, and you remove the fuel pump relay...does it start when it isnt flooding? What is your system and reference voltage...what is cranking vacuum? And what tests did you run that inspired changing all that stuff? Check the c ranking rpm in Generic mode just rpm onscreen, some OEM software doesnt update well during cranking, with one pid selected, solus should update better than 10x a sec, If you still have no signal...you need to measure the crank sensor wires or verify the crank sensor ring is even turning,

What could cause a1991 suzuki samurai to have no fire from a new coil?


no spark from coil directly?
is the cam turning, is the dizzy rotor spinning. ????

check all fuses first. Ig-coil, FI and dome.
then using diagnostic jumper wire or fuse, (as approp)
crank engine look for code 41 o 42.!!!

our cars are all EFI that year.
no engine swaps to Suzuki G16A/B sidekick or tracker engines.!
1: engine cranks
2: no spark
3: The ECu makes spark
the CMP sensor in the DIzzy , (never fails if rotor turns, does rotor turn, if not cam belt igored and now snapped.)
the cam turns. the CMP fires. the ECU takes this CMP signal
and fires the ignitor next to coil and the coil charges, and release and BAM spark.

that is it.
the ECU will tell you when the CMP dies or the Ignitor fails
why not ask it.
1: key on
2: diagnostic jumper in place (flashes 12s for ok)
3: crank engine,for 5sec, not 1 ,not 2.
3: release key not off.
4: see code 41, or 42, BINGO !@!!!!

My 1991 oldsmobile eighty eight royale keeps dying when i drive it, I have replaced ing control moduel, fuel pump, mass air flow , cam shaft sensor, timing chain, plugs wires ect. do i need to keep...


With that much already invested, why give up now? How about the crank position sensor-was that replaced as well? For spark control and spark timing, the computer needs inputs from both the cam position sensor and the crank position sensor before it can know when to cut power to the coils for spark to occur.
Before proceeding any further, you should check for diagnostic trouble codes. You would need an OBD 1 type code reader or scanner for your olds. Any stored codes may help you find the problem.
You can test the ignition system by checking for spark on a spark plug wire when the engine is cranking over. Pull the plug wire off a spark plug and put in a clean spark plug into the wire. Lay the plug so the threads are touching metal on the engine somewhere. Have someone crank the engine over and watch for a spark from the spark plug. If you have a blue, snapping spark when cranking, ignition is good.
One last note: since it dies when driving, there is a possibility that you have a malfunction in the pcm-the computer.

My 1994 cavalier lost spark to cylinders 1 and 4. Which components are directly related to ignition spark and timing? What about the camshaft sensor?


You listed all the components involved in spark timing and control- coil, ignition module, pcm, wires, plugs, crank sensor, and cam sensor.
Cylinders 1 and 4 have the same coil for both, so concentrate on that coil. You still have a good blue spark on cylinders 2 and 3? If you have spark there, I don't know about the cam sensor-I think it would be good if it works at all. You need to check if you have 12 volts power to the coil for 1 and 4.

The cam sensor is supplied a reference voltage by the engine computer and the cam sensor should generate a signal back to the engine computer above 50 rpm of the engine cranking. The problem could be a faulty purchased cam sensor (yes this happens sometimes although rare) fwiring connector problem at cam sensor or faulty engine computer.

Replaced coolant temp sensor, would not fire before replacement. sat overnight an won,t fire off cranks fine just no start has had new timing belt, new starter, new batt., new coils an wires, new plugs


to many things have been done=wasting money.test the spark by remouving the plug wire put a1/4" bolt in the end of the wire hold it with an insulated pliers near the engine metal and have someone turn the keyas though starting.if you have a good stoung cracking spark ok.irf not the computer may not be activaitng the coils.+cam crank sensor no good. the cam sensor has been a big problem.probably find further info at the library.or have it towed to a sop.there are a lot of more complicated issues involved with a no start that need to be tested before throwing more parts at it.

check e.c.u pins and run a diagnostic check if diagnostic check dont work and pins are not corroded the green wire supplying power to each coil has burnt out going back to the ignition through the harness
