We also just had an oil change done and the check engine light came on as well as the cruise control light. The cruise control function is not working.

Same problem. Car was in for 60K service and the next day the check engine light came on with the cruise control light blinking and cruise not functional. After a coupel of days everything returned to normal but then came bac. Currently still have the problem.

i hope this isnt a big issue, but i have the same exact problem

  • kpb86midd Dec 20, 2008

    2005 outback with 41k miles.

same problem cropped up during the snowstorm today. CEL and blinking cruise was on.

Initially I also had ABS light and on odometer "er 55" show up. These two problems resolved themselves after I turned off and turned on again. but the CEL and cruise problem persisted.

My friend recommended disconnecting battery and draining all current from car to reset computer, then reconnecting. Will give it a shot. If not, car will be in soon for 45k service.

If anyone else knows cause or solutions please let know.

Also heard from friends that it might be some aggressive driving / sliding in slippery conditions earlier today that might have caused engine sensor problems, or car to run a bit rich... still looking for more help on this topic.

i am having this same problem on my 2006 WRX. I dont think it started happening until 2-3 weeks after an oil change though.

  • ruemler6564 Jan 02, 2009

Same deal. 2008 WRX immediately after oil change. Blinking cruise and Check Engine lights on.. I shut it down and restarted, but lights still there. I'll try unplugging battery and see if that works.

Have the same problem after getting oil changed and fuel injectors cleaned. Had mechanic reset once but it came back on.

  • adkins_max Jan 20, 2009

I have a 2008 Impreza 2.5i with less than 8,000 miles on it. The same problem started for me this morning. CEL came on, "Cruise" light blinks, and the cruise control function doen't respond.

Possible solution to original question related to cruise control. The 'mechanic' may have bumped and misaligned the sensor for the cruise control.

SOURCE: 2006 Subaru Outback: all of a sudden, the cruis

Hello, whenever the check engine light comes on the cruse light will flash as well, that is normal. The check engine light will not come on if fluid levels are low or if the temp is getting to high, I am pleased to know that you checked all of the fluids, most wouldn't have even the slightest thought to even try checking them. The On Board Diagnostics or OBD-2 for short only sets a check engine light when the ECM or Electronic Control Module reads a sensor value either too high or too low, but it has to read that same fault 3 consecutive times in a row to turn on the check engine light (w/ flashing cruise). Otherwise your check engine light would be going on and off all the time. I would go to your local parts store and have them check the codes for free because a dealer will have to charge you labor for them to check due to the knowledge needed to use the highly sophisticated scan tool they use. That way you can go either to an independent shop or a dealer with what the other scanner says is wrong which cuts down on the cost of repairs. They will probably ask you if you fueled up just before the engine light came on, in which that would be code P0440:EVAP leak(very small leak), that means the fuel tank sensor doesn't like how you put the fuel cap on. Subaru recommends AT LEAST 3 clicks when tightening your fuel cap. But until that code is checked you won't know whats wrong, if nothing went boom or bang you'll probably be ok. If it does end up being a fuel cap leak, then just loosen the cap put it back on and just make 1 full revolution, and just keep driving it. The light will go off within 3 full warm up cool down cycles or (drive cycles). I hope this info helps...(subyguru)...

SOURCE: Check engine light came on

I did end up taking my car to the dealership where I bought it. They were great! He knew immediately what the problem was. Of course, they still did a thorough check too.
Anyway, it turned out that the plug to the electronic system had been knocked loose. This caused the check engine light to come on & the cruise control to not work (you were right, if the check engine light is on, cruise doesn't work). As for the door, that was simply the switch plate needing to be adjusted.

Take the car to Autozone or similar business for a free code read with a scanner. Depending on what turns up, they will be happy to sell you any needed parts.

Check engine light on traction control light on cruise light blinking whats wrong?

When you have a check engine light come on, the traction control light and the cruise lights both come on as well. You need to have the codes checked with a scanner. There most likely isn't a problem with the traction control or cruise systems, the lights turn on because those systems work together with the engine management system or PCM. When there is an engine problem that sets a code that turns on the check engine light, it automatically disables the cruise control and traction control for safety reasons. Because the last thing you want is to have an issue with traction control and/or cruise control if your engine is having an issue, which is why they are disabled. The most common problem that turns on the check engine light is a loose, cross-threaded, or snug but not tight enough fuel filler cap. Subaru recommends three clicks of the cap to be considered tight. Also, any parts store can and will check and/or clear codes for free. I hope this info helps!

Engine light on with flashing cruise control

This happened to me when I forgot to change my engine oil when it was due for an oil change. After I changed my engine oil, it took about 200 miles for the Engine light and flashing cruise control to turn off.

Hi, the Check Engine light and the cruise light blinking tells you the computer found a problem with your vehicle's running condition but if the vehicle is driving OK, a Check Engine light is not a reason to pull over and get the problem fixed soon. In testing areas, you will fail your emissions test if the Check Engine light is on and fuel economy generally suffers when the Check Engine light is on. When the Check Engine light is on, one or more "trouble code(s)" are stored in the computer and you can read and erase trouble codes using inexpensive code-reader tools from auto-parts stores; the tools are very easy to use. The problems identified by the codes are frequently easy to fix (such as a loose gas cap), but some are complex, requiring professional diagnosis. A trouble code indicates a circuit where the problem was identified, not necessarily the component itself. Diagnosis is often necessary.

had the same problem a month ago. checked guide book, they said could be gas cap not closed properly, so checked that. no change. verified oil, realized had only a pint of oil left! concluded that using sportshift uses lots of oil, so will go easy on that now. its a goos suv, but not a sports car. All lights were off after a few starts the next morning. no problems since. When i went to dealer, he had no advice or idea a about that. All they know is show me the money !

It probably is the converter. The check engine light has nothing to do with maintenance at all, nor does it really directly concern the engine. The check engine light comes on for emmission purposes. Such as converter, loose gas cap and all kinds of sensors.
