Question about 1995 Nissan Quest

The shift lever on the column will not change gears, its in the top placement (what would be park)but wobbles in place,and will not start when you turn the key.

    Hi -

    We couldn't shift from Park to any gear. We checked the wiring and the fuses but nothing seemed to work. I guess we'll be taking it to the shop.

    My vehicle will start, but I can not shift in to gear. It feel like it is jammed inside or something. If I keep fiddling with it for a few minutes it will eventually shift real easy as though there was no problem.

    I have a 2002 Altima, automatic transmission with approx. 135 k miles. I have never had a problem with shifting into the various gear positions (P, D, N, 2 or 3), until it was towed. The gear shift will only move when the shift lock is pressed down to disengage the gears from P, D, N, etc. Is there a way to check for an error code, or sensor problems (my OBDE has not detected any problems~ there are engine problem indicator lights on at this time)? Can this problem be fixed by a novas female?

Under the dash above the pedals look to see if the linkage has come loose. you will need to get a good light and turn upside down and squeeze up in there, once positioned haved some one move the shifter and you will see if it has come loose. I had lost one screw in mine and thought I lost the entire transmission, couldnt get it in any gear, now its still a bit loose but replaced the screw and was able to shift again.

If the car starts in first, it sounds like you have a problem with the lock cable. There should be a cable from steering column to shifter that prevents the shifter from moving out of park.

Remove the center console and examine the cables. Disconnect the one from the steering column and see if that frees up the shifter. If it does, you will need to find out what is jamming the steering column. Check the cable for frays 1st. Then make sure you didn't drop something down the center console, last look at the cable connection behind the ignition key.... when you are poking around the steering column, disconnect the battery and let is sit for a few minutes or you risk the air-bags blowing up in your face.

A long time ago, I melted a gear shift cable when I didn't have a good ground on the engine block. When the car started, the power when through the shifter cable and it must have gone red hot and melted.

Shift cable starts in the steering column and runs down to the shift lever on the tranny. The sleeve that the cable runs thru can break or come loose. It has to be attached and secured along its line or else it will just flex instead of pushing and pulling the shift lever underneath. After checking that, make sure the support bracket at the steering column end is tight. over years of moving that lever up and down, it loosens the bolts of the support. This makes the lever feel loose and usually throws the red gear marker off of the lettering. There is a thin thread in the column with a thumb screw or dial that turns to adjust the marker to line up on the letters or numbers. If that shift cable is not perfectly aligned , you could be putting a lot of strain on your transmission. The fluid passages are small, and if the are not lining up 100% in each gear, you will wear it out. You will see a steady decrease in acceleration and power. Good luck.

The shift linkage is out of adjustment.

The cable bolt may be loose up at the column, the column itself may be loose enough to allow it to shift position as well.

Make sure column is securely mounted, If not- tighten the 4 bolts that hold it to the dash support so it is. if it is, crawl under driver's side and on the transmission is a bracket where the cable assembly comes into it, and from there a rod that attaches on the lever on the side of the transmission. Make sure the bracket is not damaged or cracked first- if it is, replace it. There is a captive clip to release on the wide part of the piece that the bracket holds, it does not come out fully, but it will release the cable housing so you can slide it to adjust it. With the column shift in Park position, note where the rod is at the transmission. Also make note if the bracket is in line with transmission. If bracket is in line, pull the lever rearward one notch/detent that you will feel engage the lever- this moves the transmission lever to neutral, then with firm pressure push lever forward so you feel 2 distinct notches/detents forward, the lever is now in park. Push locking clip back into position once you confirm the cable outer housing is squarely seated into bracket opening and is soundly clipped into the square opening of the bracket.

If the lever will not move to that second detent or you did not feel it, you will need to check by putting the column shift to first gear position, release the connection to the lever on the transmission just to verify location of lever, and verify the lever is indeed in first gear- the lever on the transmission will move no further- then count detents forward from the rear stop. you should end up in park, and you may hear the parking pawl engage the output shaft of transmission. move lever back to the rear to the stop, reattach the connection to the cable, put column in park, release the clip again and verify the lever is as far forward as it is going to move. Push clip into lock position.

Start Explorer, with foot on brake pedal, release the emergency/parking brake and see if the vehicle moves, or if it is truly in park. It should be in park.

If you encounter some dificulty with getting the column shift lever itself moved over to park- apply brake pedal to release the park interlock mechanism.

A common cause when the gear is on the steering column is a worn out pin. That pin holds the lever to the shift assembly. Try removing the gear shift lever and examine it.
  • If the bushing between the pin and the shift is worn out, replace it.
  • Examine the tip of the the gearshift and replace the shift if it's worn out.

2006 chrysler pacifica - drove car into my garage and shut down. Next morning I could not get the car to shift out of park.


some are set up with safety with brake lites out. ck if brake lites work if not turn key on do not start and shift to neautral and start and have brake lites repaired

My 1994 legacy has a switch on top of the steering column that turns the parking lights on and off. See if yours does too. Don't know about the shift lever.

Gear shifter does NOT shwitch from park and break


SHIFTER LOCKED IN PLACE

  1. Remove the instrument panel cover below the steering column, then remove the steering column shrouds to gain access to the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) solenoid. The solenoid is part of the interlock cable assembly.
  2. Disconnect the wire connector from the rear of the BTSI solenoid.
  3. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the ON position.
  4. With the brakes applied, try moving the shifter out of the PARK position.
    • If the lever now moves freely in and out of PARK, perform the Circuit Test below.
    • If the shift lever still does not move from the PARK position, remove the BTSI solenoid from the shift lever assembly. If the shift lever now moves freely in and out of the park position, the BTSI solenoid is faulty and the interlock cable must be replaced. If the shift lever still does not move from the park position, the problem is in the shift lever assembly or the ignition interlock cassette

You may have a loose shift linkage in the steering column. Remove the upper and lower plastic covers behind the steerong wheel (5 or 6 philips head) and see if you have any loose torx head or allen head screws. Ea
rlier models had this isue.

  1. Remove the splash shield.
  1. Loosen the shift cable nut.
  1. Position the shift linkage in PARK (P) position.
  1. Tighten the shift cable nut.

Gear shifter is not moving when u press on break


center console shifter? if so, likely could be a misadj shift cable, you can pull loose top cover per instruction maneul tells you how to get out of park till you can get it adj, or repaired

2000 range rover


Pull hard on the steering wheel to the left and the steering wheel lock mechanism should release. I mean pull hard to left because shift interlock is froze if you cannot get it this way you will need a pro to help! Good Luck Mate.
