Question about Chevrolet Suburban 1500

Water mixing with engine oil on 1999 Suburban. No steam out the exhaust and no signs of backpresure in the radiator. Rumor has it that the 5.7 vortec engine had problems with the intake gaskets. Have you heard of this? Linwood

Yes I have. The 5.7L Vortech and the 4.3L Vortech share the same problem with the intakes. I just fixed another one recently. I will either lead and the front dr. side corner or the rear pass side corner of the intake. The replacement gasket set are far superior to the stock set.

My radiator is lossing water and no sign of leakage


great question, a nice symptoms posted.!!!! and car !
The water, (coolant) can only go 3 places.
1: on the ground, (or at passenger toes, look there)
2: into the inside of the engine (see engine oil turn to milk chocolate shake?
3: in the the A/T tranny pan, same thing same milk.
4: out the exhaust, pipe end point, see steam there ALL THE TIME?

this is short term loss.
long term is normal this is evaporation.
here are the tests.

1: no steam ,tail
2: no carbon or oil in rad neck (cold)
3: milk in pans. per above.
4: rad neck tester (green/blue) chem test unit finds exh. gasses in the rad.
5: same place, RAD leak down tester.
6: compression test. all cyl.
7: cylinder leak down tester can even show me here it leaks (ASK, this is advanced testing methods but easy to do)

Have a chrysler 300 with a 3.5 litre engine. steam


Sounds like a gasket yes. If the head is aluminum it could be warped, or bock could be cracked. Either way, water in exhaust system is not a good sign. Check the oil. If there are bubbles, foam, or anything but oil, then you know it's mixing someplace.

Water is steaming from the exhaust while engine is running


Water coming from a exhaust is normal. The newer the car, the more emission control it has at protecting the environment and the more water you will see.

Remember that the combustion of hydrocarbon fuel produces both carbon dioxide AND water vapor as a normal part of the process. All gasoline engines produce water vapor and all water vapor condenses if the exhaust pipe is cool.

Have a 95 9c1 caprice with 120000 miles. changed to synthetic oil. oil pressure came up some but i then started having film of oil in water tank... i clean oil out and it comes back. whats up


Not sure if you had an oil pressure issue and is why you used synthetic oil. Was there an oil pressure issue to start with? Is it possible the oil that is in the water tank... transmission fluid? And is caused by an internal leak within the radiator and is leaching into the cooling system?
Your radiator should have transmission lines running to it, and has a large area for engine coolant to run through it, but also has a small area internally that cools the trans fluid?

Changed bad water pump and timing but car is still overheating causes


Overheating is not always caused by a bad water pump or bad engine firing timing.

The most common causes are:
  • faulty radiator cap: steam/water will be escaping from the caps when engine is hot or oveflow tank overflows or empty!
  • crack cylinder head gasket: check when engine is cold thru radiator cap hole for milky oil in water radiator or large bubbles in radiator water after starting engine. Also check if water steam comes out of exhaust.
  • cylinder head itself: same symtoms as for gasket above.

Keep loosing coolet no leaksfound


You only have a few options here:

Coolant either leaks out, evaporates, or is exhausted through the engine. Check your oil & see if you notice any coolant mixed in, indicating internal seal issues. Also, you can have a small amount of coolant drawn into the engine cylinder & exhausted as steam or vapor and never notice. If only a small amount and no noticeable engine problems, evaporation. Engine miss sometimes & refilling anti-freeze often is an internal leak, generally the Head Gasket. Very rarely, a transmission (automatic only) has been found with antifreeze in it due to a leak in the radiator/transmission cooling system. Good Luck.

1999 tahoe 5.7L has a problem. Water mixed with engine oil.


If it was not overheated real bad the intake gaskets are a big problem on those engines

How do you drain coolant in a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban? specifically from the engine block?


The easiest way to drain coolant from engine is to remove lower radiator hose from water pump and let it run out. There are no drains on the engine.

5.7's had all kinds of problems with intake manifolds but it could also be a head gasket leaking. One way to check is to pull out your spark plugs and have a look at them. One of them will should be really white looking, that is the cylinder where the coolant is leaking into. A good rule of thumb (but not always true) is that if the coolant is leaking into one of the cylinders at the very front or very back of the engine, it is an intake leak. If the coolant is leaking in one of the middle cylinders, it is a head leak.
But the only way to know absolutly for sure is to pull the intake off and look for a break in the gasket, if you see that you know its the intake manifold. If you cant see any signs of leakage its probally a head problem. Another word of advice, there is an updated gasket from fellpro that lasts longer that the OEM gasket.
