If the oil pan is replaced or the pump runs dry of oil, does the pump have to be primed with petroleum jelly or otherwise??

  • itsajeept17 May 11, 2011

    Yes it was thanks!
Also since the car is in "engine performance reduced" limp mode how do I reset? The service manuel doesn't explain;or will it automatically override the system once the oil presure is gained?

Not necessary to be primed with petroleum jelly. The oil pump will be primed itself only with engine oil after few turns of the crankshaft, when cranking the engine by the starter motor, then when engine idling. You should check out the engine oil level by the oil dipstick. Fill up with oil allways below the "Maximum" level. Never exceed the oil "Maximum" level on the dipstick!

Disconnect the battery from car terminals, wait for 10 minutes, and reconnect back the battery in order to reset the Engine Control Module (ECM). If the normally oil pressure is gained, the "engine performance reduced" limp home mode will be reseted automatically. Good Luck!

NO OIL PRESSURE LIGHT GO OF BUT NO RESPONSE ON MY GAUGE , FITTED NEW OIL PUMP AND FILTER BUT STILL SAME TAPPET NOISE

What motor? If a SBC you can't just press on the oil pump pick up, you need to have it welded on or they come loose and fall off.
Some pumps need to be primed, I would put mine into pan of clean oil and turn pump until it started sucking up the oil before installing.
If it is a 3800 Buick you need to pack gears with vasoline, so different motors require different steps in order for oil pump to function after replacing it. There is also chance filter is bad, or relief valve is bad, more info would help us help you.

How to replace an oil pump in an 93 toyota pickup with an 2.4

Oil Pump REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 22R and 22R-E Engines
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Drain the oil from the engine. Fig. 1: Exploded view of the oil pump components on 22R and 22R-E engines 86823pax.gif

  3. Remove the oil pan.
  4. Remove the four bolts holding the oil strainer.
  5. Remove the drive belts.
  6. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  7. If equipped with air conditioning, remove the compressor and its bracket. Support the compressor out of the way with the hoses attached. Do not discharge the system or loosen the compressor lines. Fig. 2: Bolt location identification 86823pay.gif

  8. Loosen the oil pump relief valve bolt.
  9. Remove the five retaining bolts and remove the oil pump assembly with the O-ring.
  10. Remove the oil pump drive spline from the crankshaft. To install: NOTE: Pack petroleum jelly between the oil pump gears. This will prime the pump during initial startup.
  11. Slide the pump drive spline onto the crankshaft. Place a new O-ring in the groove.
  12. Clean the threads of the upper retaining bolt of all grease, oil or debris. Clean all the bolts holes.
  13. Apply sealant to the first 2 or 3 threads of the upper bolt. Install all the bolts. Tighten each to the correct tightness. Bolt (a): 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm); bolts (b) 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm) and bolts (c) 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  14. Install and tighten the relief valve plug to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  15. Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
3VZ-E Engine
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the engine under cover.
  3. Remove the front differential.
  4. Drain the oil.
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6. Remove the crankshaft timing pulley.
  7. Raise the engine slightly and remove the oil pan.
  8. Remove the two bolts and nuts; remove the oil strainer and gasket.
  9. Insert a drift between the cylinder block and the oil pan baffle plate, cut off the sealer and remove the baffle plate. NOTE: When removing the baffle plate with the drift, do not damage the baffle plate flange.
  10. Remove the seven bolts, then the oil pump and O-ring. If the pump is difficult to remove, use a small plastic mallet to carefully tap the body of the oil pump. To install: NOTE: Pack petroleum jelly between the oil pump gears. This will prime the pump during initial startup.
  11. Apply sealer to the oil pump mating surface, running the bead on the inside of the bolt holes. Position a new O-ring in the groove in the cylinder block and install the pump so that the spline teeth of the drive gear engage the large teeth on the crankshaft. Tighten the mounting bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). Fig. 3: Do not apply too much sealant on the pump surface, it can block the oil passage 86823pbb.gif

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the oil pan.
  3. Remove the oil pump inlet tube and screen assembly.
  4. Unfasten the oil pump attaching bolts, then remove the oil pump gasket and the intermediate shaft.
To install:
  1. Prime the oil pump by filling the inlet and outlet ports with engine oil and rotating the shaft of pump to distribute it.
  2. Position the intermediate driveshaft into the distributor socket.
  3. Place a new gasket on the pump body and insert the intermediate driveshaft into the pump body.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Drain the engine oil, then remove the oil filter.
  4. If necessary, remove the oil cooler.
  5. Unfasten the oil pump-to-front cover retaining bolts, then remove the pump from the front cover.
  6. Lift the two pump gears from their mounting pocket in the front cover.
  7. Clean all gasket mounting surfaces.
  8. Inspect the mounting pocket for wear. If excessive wear is present, complete timing cover assembly replacement is necessary.
  9. Inspect the cover/filter mounting gasket-to-timing cover surface for flatness. Place a straightedge across the flat and check the clearance with a feeler gauge. If the measured clearance exceeds 0.004 in. (0.10mm), replace the cover/filter mount. Replace the pump gears if wear is excessive.
To install:
  1. Lightly pack the gear pocket with petroleum jelly or coat all gear surfaces with Oil Conditioner D9AZ-19579-CA or equivalent, then install the the pump gears in the cover pocket. Make sure the petroleum jelly fills all voids between the gears and pockets.

WARNING Failure to properly coat the oil pump gears may result in failure of the pump to prime when the engine is started.
  1. Position the pump body O-ring seal and install the pump body to the front cover using alignment dowels on the front cover.
  2. Tighten the pump retaining bolts as follows
    1. For vehicles through 1993, tighten the M8 bolts to 18-22 ft. lbs. (25-30 Nm) and the M10 bolts to 30-40 ft. lbs. (40-55 Nm).
    2. For 1994-96 vehicles, tighten the four smaller bolts to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm) and the two larger retaining bolts to 6-11 ft. lbs. (8-15 Nm).

  3. If removed, install the engine oil cooler. Install the oil filter.
