My 1985 Olds Salon has a malfunction in the fuel register. It lays on empty at all times, and because of it, I'm never sure how much fuel that I have left, or how much to buy. How can I fix it, can I do it myself, and is it expensive?

You sound like a DIY. So you need a repair manual, You will need it next time anyway. Your auto parts store probably carry it. If not,

if you disconnect the wire at the sensor or down from the sensor were you can get to it the gage should register empty and if you disconnect the ground it should register full. if nothing happens then the gage on the dash is bad, if gage moves the fuel level sensor in the tank is bad.

Pull the distributor make sure plug #1 is at top dead center on the power stroke and set distributor back in making sure the coil is on plug 1 wire . Watch out cause it can be set 180 degrees off if the plug isn't on the right stroke .

Replace the power brake booster.

fuel level sensor is fulty!!Happens alot with GM vehicles

I would call a Trans Shop, they would be best to tell you.

Check the connection at the tank to see if it is connected.Then take a test light and ground the test light to a good ground.With the key on,probe the wire going into the tank,there is more than one so the one you probe will have a dim light,and when this happens,the gauge will fall to empty.This will happen if the sending unit is bad in the tank,
