  • Well you need new freeze plug. A flat head screw driver. A mallet.
  • If you can get to the freeze plug then you just take the screwdriver and tap the bottom lip of the freeze plug a bit till it caves in just a bit (don't drop it into the engine)
  • Take a pair of locking pliers and pull the bad freeze plug out.
  • Place the new freeze plug in place and take the handle of the screwdriver and place it on the freeze plug and tap on the tip of the screwdriver gently until the new freeze plug is in place.
  • Now sometimes them plugs are not accessible with the engine inside the bay which means you have to take a Cherry Picker and pull the engine or at least remove a lot of parts to get to it but the actual replacement takes just minutes.

Regards, Tony

Make sure to clean the hole with some sandpaper when the old freeze plug is removed to make for a nice clean install of the new one.

You will need a screwdriver to pry the old one out a new rubber freeze plug and a wrench and socket and ratchet to tighten the rubber freeze plug. Also you will need anti freeze to refill the cooling system.

1994 3.9l A/T. Rear freeze plug needs to be replaced. Do I need to pull the transmission?

Yes. There are two or three freeze plugs on the back of the engine, under the bell housing of the transmission. The suggestion to use a rubber expandable freeze plug may work, depending on which one(s) are leaking, but that is a temporary fix. And I'm not sure you can get to the top plug with the flex plate and torque converter in place. To do it right, you need to remove the transmission and put in a standard all-metal freeze plug.

Replacing freeze plugs on Madza 929 Do you have to take the head off to get to some of them ?

if you ever have this issue where you don't believe them. they have shop manuals and can show you the parts in the motor. you have the 6 cylinder and i don't have the shop manual to see how they come apart. most engines you don't need to pull the heads off. yours could be different. there should be freeze plugs around the block that rust out and are a pain to change. did they pull the motor to change those? what year is it and i am guessing you live where they salt the roads

Freeze out plugs

The freeze plugs are a term used for the residual casting hole caps in a motor block. The original cap design is a pressed fit to an open hole.

The cap can rust through and leak. Or the casting can have a less than perfect opening difficult to seal.

Newer designs have expandable rubber plugs which can be easier to install and more successful. But this does not exclude using a standard replacement.

There is an advantage in experience for installing these parts. But the process is using a hammer and socket to drive the part into the engine block.

Access is the key for either replacement freeze-plug. Each plug is stand alone, with any being as likely to survive or fail as the other. Good quality anti-freeze has rust inhibiters to preserve these parts. In short, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Fix the leaking part and leave the rest.

Freeze plug is broke how 2 fix

Go to the parts store and get a rubber/metal/bolt/screw assembly designed to plug freeze plugs that come out of the engine and leak antifreeze.

It will look a little different than the original freeze plug, but will work fine.
