MY 84 VETTE DOES THE SAME THING. THE BATTERY GOES DEAD WITHIN A COUPLE OF DAYS. OPEN CIRCUT COMES BACK TO #491 & #40.

Does it have an alarm system, or an aftermarket sound system?

If it still does it, locate the fuse panel and with the car off, pull a fuse and measure the current draw.  Be careful.  Make sure your meter is on HI AMPS.

Well best thing to do is to take a voltmeter and check for a continuing circuit throughout the alternator starter and battery. If you cant seem to figure it out which is a common case. You can do what i have done and install a battery cutoff switch. This will cut the battery off so that way, when you shut the car off you can kill the battery so it wont sit and drain.. If the short isn't directly related to a old positive or negative battery cable or the alternator wire needing to be tightened/changed. You can use a trick of when the car is off testing the wires to see what is hot, what is not and what is less then the continuing current should be.

here is the link to a shutoff switch.

i hope you found this helpful or fixya worthy.

thanks - Nate

2000 impala 3800engine when sits battery drains

If the battery goes dead in a few days, something is "on" and draining it.
Someone will need to check the circuits to find the drain. You can pull all of the fuses or check each circuit one at a time with a test light.

New starter, alt, and battery but battery drains over night boost car and runs all day next day no start. manual transmission so i roll down hill and it starts but not when battery is totally dead

there are not a lot of computers that could be causing the drain, so baring any aftermarket accessories you should start searching for an indirect short to power

prop hood and leave the doors open... this is important because you do not want to wake the computers once you start your test

next, unplug the negative battery cable and insert a DVOM in series

drain should be less than 80mA after 30-90 minutes

if drain is higher, start pulling fuses until the drain is isolated

Have a short or something draining battery. alt is fine battery is new. Noticed clock is on all the time. Will not turn off with key like radio. Will the clock drain a battery dry in as short as a week of...

Get a multimeter then disconnect the positive side of the battery. Measure the amp(current) between the terminal you just disconnected and the positive battery while the car is off. and have someone get a tweezer and pull out one at a time each fuse in the fuse box. When the amp goes down on the multimeter then you found out where in your car there is a short. Note the fuse you pulled out in your car manual. It could be radio shorting, domelight shorting. Sometimes kids drop pennys or coins in the radio disk slots shorting the radio or amplifier in the car is always on.

Battery dies after car is sitting for 2 days. Alt

I assume you have replaced the battery? If not have it tested.

Check to see if a glove box light, trunk light or under hood light is staying on. Also you can remove the negative battery cable and then reinstall it. When reinstalling it, if you see a spark (other than just a very small one) there is a current draw on the battery. This current draw can be isolated by pulling one fuse at a time to see when the battery stops sparking on reconnect. It is possible you could have a shorted voltage regulator causing the current draw also. Many things can cause this problem.

If you have changed the alternator and regulator, about all that could be left would either be a short circuit that is draining current away, or a bad ignition warning light bulb. That is because the power to energize the field of the alternator, comes through this dash bulb.

go to the back off the alt at the main post there should be a heavy red wire take a volt meter and see if you battery voltage. if you do not the fusable link wire at the starter there will be three of them one of them has failed . what that wire dose it feeds the battery voltage . if there is no voltage on that wire the alt will not work good luck kdc744
