    Its not low on any fluids. And it starts up 2 minutes later and runs for another 20 to 30 minuts

    I will check that out. But the tack drop's instantly when it dies which seems more ignition related.

    My Jetta did the same thing on a road trip to Vegas. And on the way home from Vegas. Why would a car die like that?

    hmmm I have not looked at the coil yet I will replace it and see what happens.

    Hi,

    I have the same problem with my 89 Jetta. Damp weather causes car to stop completely when running (usually in the middle of an intersection ; ) )

    Wait a few moments, then can restart.

    I have just completely removed the aftermarket immobilser to ensure its not the culprit. So now it will start (cold) but if ignition turned off, won't start....wait 5 minutes ..will start. Once engine warmed up...it seems to start anytime...although still havn't fully tested without immoblizer on. Next step I think will be to check ignition and fuel pump relay as mentioned on this thread

    Found out that a related problem was faulty fuel Injection (ecu) relay #32.  It is in the same circuit as the fuel pump relay..which should both be checked.  Both relays are about $10 each

HMMM, as far as i know, that model of jetta has DRY COILS, meaning no oil in em.

Under the dash is the fuel pump relay. When it gets hot after driving for a while, it will not turn on to power the fuel pump until it cools off. The relay is located above the fuse panel. There you'll find the row of relays.

    Sounds like your coil is getting hot and shutting down. The coil is oil filled so when the oil gets hot and the coil quits working. The coil then cools down and can conduct electricity again.

I would unplug the gas cap when it stalls; if you hear a hissing sound, change the gas cap, because it builds up a vacuum in the tank.

Check the fuel pressure with a gauge and see if the pressure is dropping during this bog. This would be the first place to start a diagnosis.

The fuel pump relay needs to be replaced. it is behind the battery and the fire wall.

2002 VW Jetta died while driving it.


Either you threw a belt or the alternator went bad. Your symptoms sound like alternator...you were running on the battery till you ran out of power.
