True you have a locking pin that hold it in gear ..or your thrw ouit bearing could be bad ..or the spring you were talking about is lost its strength..

Transmission won't engage in Toyota Tercel

pop off the cap on your clutch reservoir, if it's empty fill it up, leave the cap off, and then pump the clutch 20 times to try to get air out, that should work.

4wheel drive won't engage

it has to be a linkage problem. the linkages had to be re moved to get the clutch out and have not been put back on correctly or at all.the clutch has no bearing at all on the engaugeing of 4wd

Can't budge ford F150 4WD shifter

I actually just had this same problem on my 1997 F250. I decided to try and force it though and snapped it off like an idiot before I realized what the problem was. If you go under your truck, you will see where the 4x4 lever engages the linkage. About 3/4" off the bottom of the lever, you will see there is a 1/2" nub that sits inside a track. Occasionally this nub will "pop" itself outside that track and need to be worked back in"i used a screwdriver and just pryed it back in". This must be a common issue, because mine was out of the track, and when I went to the junkyard to replace, 4 out of 7 were the same way. I ended up getting one and just popped the nub back in and it has shifted with ease for 3 years now. If I confused ya at all, email me at and ill send ya some pics.
