I had the same issue on my Ssangyong Musso. It turned out to be rusted spark plugs. The sputtering is most likely an electrical fault somewhere in the ignition system. Either a faulty wire, lead, ignitor, connection or plugs.

The first step you need to do is go to autozone and get a free check engine light test to see what sensor is bad then replace that sensor i would bet your issue would be resolved with that if not fixed after that do a tune up spark plugs wires coil fuel filter pcv valve and egr

if it helps please leave feedback it helps us help you

SOURCE: puttering sound

You could have bad gas, Try running some injector cleaner and then chaging your fuel filter after a week of drving. Good luck

A wire might be out of place. First, check for a blown fuse. You are supposed to un hook the batter while doing the procedure to avoid sparking.

Car Technical Problem

When was the fuel pressure regulator checked or replaced? What about the gas cap? Did you ever change THAT? Gas caps are pretty cheap, and pretty much "do it yourself" items!

Try cleaning the throttle body (throttle body cleanner ONLY). Uncover the TB (engine off) & inspect the butterfly by moving the throttle by hand, if the underside & down inside the TB has a bunch of carbon (black soot) that could hamper with the idle! Also, check the fuel pressure @ the rail, under 60 psi could cause bad idle. Air filter clean? Did you make SURE that the terminals under the spider injector wiring harness has NO pins bent over during connection?! Also could check the throttle possition sensor & the mass air flow sensor if need be.

The check engine light is blinking off and on; the engine is puttering when on and when you press the gas, there is not much power.

Sounds like you have a pretty bad running condition if the light is flashing. Best place to start would be a basic tuneup with plugs. When you pull off the ignition coils make sure they dont look burnt, they may need to be replaced if they are.

First of all, there are far too many possible causes for the symptom you describe. Did the 'Check Engine' Light come ON? Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on. You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE and perhaps eventually fix the problem.
