Try this remove the throttle cable from the throttle body and re-ve the engine with the just the linkage on the side of the throttle body if the engine responds like it should replace the throttle cable if the throttle still sticks then replace the throttle body......good luck

let me know how it come out.

did the problem go away with the cable unhooked? if it did replace throttle body get a used one most salvage yards are 25-50 bucks.

My 1996 GMC half ton 2wd revs up to about 2000 rpm on start up without touching the accelerator. After a few seconds, it goes back to normal. Also, when you put it into drive or reverse, it accelerates...

If the throttle cable is not attached properly to the throttle body or you have a bad motor mount, the throttle cable may be pulling the throttle open as you shift into gear. Open the hood, find the throttle cable on the throttle body. Inspect how it is connected and also how the cable is fastened in the engine comoartnent. Next, watch what happens as someone else starts the truck and puts it into gear. If the engine shifts significantly, check for broken motor mounts. If the throttle cable is misbehaving, correct the installation.

The car shift in first and second gear but slip in third is this problem common in probe?

I have a 1989 Probe GT, 2.2L, 5spd, Turbo.

If its one thing I have learned about the Probes is that they are amazing cars until something needs fixing.

--Is the car an automatic or manual trans?
--What engine is in it (if you know)? If not what size is it
(ex. 2.2L, 4cyl / 3.0 V-6)

If its an automatic it could be a number of problems. If its manual the most likely causes are bent or broken shift linkage, or third gear is shot.

Is it only 3rd gear that it pops out of, or anything past second?

96 c1500 2wd engine has started sounding like its

it sounds like you have a vaccum leak more than likely. check near the intake manifold near the fire wall there are several vaccum lines there. also remove the the breather hose and check that your throttle plate is not sticking(this of course only applies if you have fuel injection. if you have a tbi or it's carburated check the throttle linkage to see if it's perhaps sticking

Chevy 1/2 ton 2wd 4.3 vortec rough idle tried everything I know

I had the same problem with my 96 Chevy 4.3. It idled rough enough to shake the truck at a stop. It revved up fine but sputtered on take off. My truck did not want to stay in overdrive because of the low rev. I changed cap, rotor, plugs, wires and this did nothing. Finally I took the intake off and found corrosion on the side intake gaskets near the rear of the engine causing a vacuum leak.
