Question about 1985 Toyota Celica

1985 Celica GTS convertible 2.4L

Car will start, run fine for a couple minutes and then just cut off. Sometimes it will restart and sometimes it will not start again for a few days. I replaced the coil and that did not resolve the problem.

Had this problem too. Turned out to be the fuel pump. Also check pin 1 +2 on the afm should read 0 ohms when you open the flap door.

Sounds like a clogged fuel filter to me.

Almost HAS to be a fuel issue. Have the fuel pressure/flow tested.

You need the exhaust converter so the O2 sensor can
work properly

It sounds as though the converter is blocked,as well
as the fuel trim, if that is correct term for an OBD1 System,
is not able to report back the oxygen in the failed converter

So the ecm can not provide the correct fuel mixture by
pulsing the injectors

I would also expect the timing chain to have a lot of slop
& possibly be off a couple teeth, from worm plastic gear
on cam

It sounds like you catalytic converter is clogged. You can get a universal replacement cat from Jeg's for $50.
If it is a clogged cat, it will be getting really hot.
