Question about 1986 Toyota Tercel

1 Answer

86 tercel, 3ac engine, ignitor faulty, cannot find it??

My 86 tercel station wagon died on the road, there is positive current between the coil and ground, both on the positive and negative pole, but as I rev the starter nothing happens, I get no current to the distributor at all. I tried another coil and still no result so coil is fine. Friends tell me it has to be the ignitor, which I guess I could check, but where is it?? It is not on the firewall, as on some models. My dis sits on the engine block and the coil hangs vertically on the wheel housing, drivers side, right behind the battery and in front of the fuel filter, but I cannot find the ignitor.

I concluded that the coil is actually healthy and emits current, a guy looked at my dis and said the breakers are done. Will try and replace those. If that doesn't work, I will come back here.... Thanks.

I have a 1986 Tercel 4WD wagon. The problem is no spark from distributor, there is power to coil. I have checked power at the coil ,positive and negative sides. I unplugged the distributor and checked power, one lead has power and one does not. I was told one goes to coil and one goes to igniter. Any idea where the leads come from? My repair manual shows nothing other than the leads at the distributor.

It might be that the contact point within your distributor has worn out. you may have to just replace that.

Fixed timing marks on a toyota tercel 1.5 3ac enging 1986

Cam timing mark is a hole in the cam wheel which when positioned vertical a dot or an arrow behind it can be viewed through the hole and aligned with it.

Crank mark is another dot at about 2 o'clock and a notch in the disc behind the toothed pulley.
If there is any difficulty locating the mark, usually removing the no1 spark plug will allow a rod to rest on the piston top while the crank is gently turned. When the rod indicates tdc the two marks should be approximately in line.

You'll need to figure out if you are loosing fuel or spark to proceed. it could be a relay or several other components.

vacuum leaks in these old cars are frequent you need the vacuum lines replaced they become porous and are extensive, also the timing must be tweaked to 10 degrees instead of the recomended 5 degrees as long as the car does not ping going up hills this is a essential modification to OEM recommendations I own a 1985 4wd station wagon replace the O2 sensor 35 bucks rockauto.com

86 subaru gl wagon not firing.

I have the same problem with my 86 GL 4WD. One day it started to turn, and then lost all power. I couldn't even turn on the lights. I have played with the ignition switch wires, and gotten it to fire. I think there may be a short somewhere in the switch or the wires to the harness, but I have not isolated it yet. You might check your ignition switch and wiring...
