- My fuel gauge has also stopped working on my 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. When I fill up the tank and restart the engine the gauge sometimes reads empty and other times it reads half full. Can't say for sure since you did not include year of your car but more than likely it's the fuel sending unit that requires replacement. Some years you can replace just the level sensor on the fuel sending unit but both repairs involve dropping the gas tank and opening to remove the fuel sending unit.

In the 2002 Silverado the fuel sending unit and the fuel pump are together as a single unit in the fuel tank. DO NOT remove the fuel tank. It is much easier to remove the eight bolts that secure the bed to the frame, lift the drivers side of the bed and place a jack stand between the frame and bed. This allows access to the top of the tank where the unit is removed. Parts cost about $250.00.

i have 1993 Crown vic police model and my gauge ready 3/4 full all the time.
Napa, autozone website say that my cars does not have a sending unit.
Does that mean i have to buy the 325$$ fuel pump do make it work or what.
