Question about 1991 Isuzu Rodeo

2 Answers

The serpentine belt on this rodeo continues to fray. it appears that the belt rides to close to the inside (motor side ) of the water pump and cooling fan pulley. The air conditioner has been replaced and works fine. All pulleys seem to be in alignment. With the air conditioner off and a shorter belt on it does the same thing. Is there something I am missing here. The cooling fan pulley does not seem to have any wear either. It seems to idol and run fine then when at a higher rpm it will shred the belt.

i simply need to see how the belts go on

I have replaced the serpentine belt about 3 times over the last 4 years. It keeps wearing on the inside edge, and then comes apart. I can't see where the missalignment is coming from. The original lasted 80,000 miles, and the issue started after I changed the timing belt, but I can't see where the misalignment is comming from?

I can probably help you both. Check your powersteering pump. There is a bracket that connects it to the exhaust manifold. My braket broke and the pump adjusted forwards which allowed the belt to get chewed on. I can also help with the routing of the belt. If you have AC and power steering it travels this way, ( I can also give a picture with an email address). Put the belt in through the passenger side by the battery and loop it over the crank pully, now bring it around the water pump so that the inside of the belt is on the crank and the back of the belt is on the water pully, then it goes around the power steering and up to the AC, there is an idler pully between the altenator and the AC compressor, the belt goes under it, then over the altenator, lastly you'll need a 15 MM socket and will have to pull the tensioner to the driverside by pulling to the passenger side and puttin the belt on the outside, Use a long bar and watch that top radiator hose and the fan blades. Its a bit of a pain, but I've had to take my belt on and off so many times I don't have to look at the pictures. Plus the pictures are drawn sideways to the engine. If I'm feeling frisky I'll draw it on paint and post a link for it.

Call carquest and ask if they have a belt diagram section in their belt book... if they do, just go trace it. :)

I got a300 grizzly an changed water pump now the temp. light com's on why?

1. There's a problem with the pump installation, such as an incorrect gasket blocking a passage, wrong hose connections, or loose belt (if you have a serpentine belt with a tensioner, verify that the belt is correctly routed and is not inside out. The ribbed side should be riding on grooved pulleys, and the smooth side should be on flat-surfaced pulleys.)
2. There's a major blockage in the coolant system, such as debris from the old pump jamming the thermostat.
3. The system is low on coolant because there was a lot of air remaining in the system when you put the coolant in.

Also, check that the radiator fan(s) is working properly. Maybe a stray tool or part is hanging it up, or the fan motor is disconnected - stranger things have happened under the hood.

Leaking water from front of oil pan

check the seal around your water pump and also the radiator hoses. more than likely you have a leaking water pump. look for signs of coolant on the serpentine belt and keep a close eye on your coolant level.

How to change a water pump

First drain the coolant if possible (you will find a drain **** on the bottom drivers side of rad). Loosen the water pump pulley bolts while serpentine belt still attached (10mm X 4). Remove the serpentine belt, and plastic diagram bracket just above the waterpump. Remove the (8mm bolts X 5) holding the water pump to front engine housing. Note the little arrow or triangle at the top of waterpump when removing, it will help you to install new water pump in same location. Scrape off most of the old gasket material, use fine sand paper to clean engine surface as best as possible. Install new gasket to water pump, and align the holes (it only goes on one way, and maybe upside down if they don't line up). Locate arrow and reinstall, torque 5 bolts to 89 in/lbs tight but not too tight. Reinstall pulley, serpentine belt and bracket. Tighten the pulley bolts, refill coolant (close drain ****). Just above the waterpump there is a coolant hose with a little 7mm screw for a bleeder. Open the bleeder (engine off). Continue to fill rad with coolant until it comes out bleeder. Close bleeder and test run. Recheck the coolant level later when cooled.

Replace alternator

The alternator belt on the 1999 Dodge Caravan also controls the air conditioner compressor, the water pump and the power steering pump. The belt is called a serpentine belt, and it is designed to fit around all of the accessory pulleys at the same time. As the belt travels around each accessory pulley, it enables the accessory to operate. Once the belt is damaged, cracked or frayed, you should change it before it breaks. If that happens, each of the accessories will stop working.

Open the hood and prop it up so that it does not fall. Engage the parking brake.

Inspect the top surface of the fan shroud for the serpentine belt routing diagram. Follow the routing instructions on the diagram to install the new belt.

Locate the serpentine belt self-adjusting tensioner on the front of the engine. The tensioner is directly below the alternator. Use the bolt that connects the tensioner pulley to the tensioner arm to rotate the tensioner.

Turn the tensioner device counterclockwise to move the tensioner. This will relieve the tension from the belt. Once the belt has enough slack in it, slide the belt out from under the tensioner pulley.

Lift the belt off each accessory pulley. Slide the belt around the fan blades and out of the engine area.

Lay the old belt next to the new belt to ensure that the new belt is the correct width and length. Slide the belt around the fan blades and around the crankshaft pulley on the bottom of the engine.

Follow the belt routing diagram to position the belt around the air conditioner compressor pulley, the power steering pump pulley, the water pump pulley and the idler pulley. Once the belt is routed inside each accessory pulley, inspect the belt to make sure that it is securely inside the pulleys.

Crank the 1999 Dodge Caravan for 10 to 15 seconds to completely seat the belt ribs in the grooves on each accessory pulley. Shut the engine off and close the hood.

If the belt routing diagram for the 1999 Dodge Caravan is missing, use a pen and a notepad to draw the exact routing of the old belt and use it when installing the new belt.

My mechanic is telling me that it's necessary to replace the water pump on my 2002 Isuzu Rodeo when replacing the serpentine belt. Is this true? Ball park figure, how much would it be to replace both?

BS. Water pump should be replaced with the TIMING BELT. The serpentine belt doesnt even touch the water pump. If you have a V6 that is. but you didnt say what engine you have.

Water Pump Drive Belt

a bunch of idiots - the guy is right there are 2 belts - one serpentine and one just for the water pump - you will need to remove the water pump and belt at the same time - if the belt is frayed then you can bet the water pump is close to shot too

97 Lexus Es300 noise under the hood by alternator

mcdevito75 here, If you have 1 continuous belt on the engine (serpentine) then the belt could be worn or the tension pully holding the belt tight could be going bad. No noise in Neautral or Park as increased engine speed in these gears over rides the worn part and thus no noise. On a cold engine examine the belt, look for frays / wear from where the belt rides the pullys. If the belt is 2 years old, Change it.

Smelled mild burning, lost antifreeze - engine temp Hot. I looked under car and noticed a serverly frayed Belt - NOT the big surpentine belt - another small belt on the driver's side. 1999 Mercury Mystique...

For the 1999 Mercury Mystique Water Pump Belt on 2.5L V6 Engine:

Probable Causes: Belt: worn out, started slipping. Overheating caused by failure of Belt. Lost antifreeze: caused by failure of belt, not turning Water Pump Pulley, not circulating anitfreeze, which resulted in overheating.

Click on the following free direct Link. It has the Serpentine & Drive Belt Diagrams and Tensioners for your 2.5L Engine.
Scroll down the Page (about 1/3rd down) to Diagram #G99H08189, it shows the specific Water Pump Belt.
Note the Tensioner.
