Yes...it should be located on the left hand side just behind the kick panel of the center console.

To the rear, next to the left seat, is a small slotted lock. Use a screw driver to turn it, pull that out slightly, slide the panel back and it should pop out.

Now the drain tube should be visible if I remember correctly.

Also there is a pollen filter under the glove box. If that hasn't been replaced, I'd suggest replacing it and spraying the new filter with some type of disinfectant.

If none of those alleviate the problem, the dealership should have some kind of mildew application that will help this stinky problem.

Bad smell coming from ac when turned on 2008 tacoma

This is likely mildew in the evaporator.
Check and verify that the evaporator drain is clear. This is the rubber hose coming out of the bottom of the firewall in front of the passenger, it is aimed at the frame.
There are evaporator cleaning products available at home improvement stores that you can spray on the evaporator (might need a friend with a skinny arm). They do not need to be rinsed, simply run the AC and the moisture from the air will condense and rinse the coils. Also check and change your cabin filter. It is located behind the glove box under the horizontal trap door. It's about $15 and should be replaced about once a year, more often if you park under a tree.

Mildew smell in car from AC

Sounds like the evaporator coil, or a hose to it is leaking inside the car. Do you see water on the ground with the car sitting and the air on? Maybe the drain is clogged? Mold build up has clogged drain?

My 2001 Ford Focus. A/C Smells Horrible

  • Your evaporator sits inside a box and the moisture collects in there an can begin to create mold and mildew.
  • There is a two part cleaning system that you can buy.
  • One part is injected into the evaporator case and the other into the drain tube and is pretty effective in cleaning things out.
  • Also you want to turn your AC off a couple miles from home and turn the fan on so the evaporator can dry out a bit. This helps a great deal too.

  • If you have any comments you can feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

When my ac comes on on a hot day the air smells like mildew?? Does the cabin filter fix that?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. Actually if there is mildew in the system it takes a serious cleaning of the evaporator coil and near by plastic housing / ducting to get rid of the smell. Mildew usually starts forming on the evaporator coil and compartment when the compartment drain gets to be really slow from debris or a dust clog. You can try filters and air fresheners but all they will do is mask the mildew odor. Once the mildew routine starts the only real fix is a serious cleaning of the evaporator coil, compartment and nearby air ducting. Often it takes a good mild and mildew remover to get rid of the problem completely. The evaporator compartment will for sure have to be opened up. If a service shop is going to do the cleaning job correctly they will most likely pump out the freon in the AC system and remove the evaporator coil for proper cleaning. It is not a cheap fix as it is labor intensive and requires the AC system to be drained and re-serviced. Demand that they clean the compartment drain during the cleaning process. My comments are what it really takes to purge the mildew from the AC system correctly. Your call as to fix it or live with it.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Hi, i would like to know why when i run the a/c ,the next day i get that steal smeal from the vents. i changed the cabin air filters ,but still the smell remains. please help. AD

This smell is caused by mold and mildew build up in the AC air passages and on the heater and the AC evaporator cores in the dash, u can spray LYSOL mold and mildew remover into the system at the air intake in front of the windshield with the blower turned to max, use about 1/4 can, then turn off the system and let it sit for an hour, then turn it back on with full heat, let that run to dry out the chemical, this will cure the smell short term until the mold and mildew grow back, it is a fix we did often in the shop, the wetter the climate u live in the worse the problem

Where is the heater core located on the 2002 Volvo S60?

There may be a clogg in the drain for your air condition. Or the drain for the water coming off of the windshield (on the bottom where the wiper blades are, may be clogged with leaves or debris. To check take a hose or alot of water and pour on windshield then look to see if it drips inside on the driver floor. To check if its an Ac drain leak turn AC on and run for a while and check to see if the mat is wet or water is dripping on floor mat. Good Luck

Air conditioner

There is no filter, this smell is caused by mold/mildew in the system from normal condensation from the AC evaporator core, you can try Lysol, spray at the air intake in front of the windshield for about 20 seconds, turn of the system and let it set overnight, this will cure the problem for a few months, then you will have to treat it again, as the mold will regrow in the moist environment of the AC air distribution box.
