Question about 2003 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

Transmission Our van has just over 100,000 miles on it and I noticed last week that it seemed to hesitate a little before shifting into the next gear at around 35-40 miles per hour. Now it is not going into gear at all, the more you accelerate the higher the RPM's go, but it never goes into gear so for the moment it basically won't go above 35 mph. Had the basic check engine light scan done and came up with a code suggesting a problem with the transaxle control module. This has been replaced but still having the same problem. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Transmission Problems?

An automatic transmission with 300,000 miles on it should be in some kind of record book it's unheard of !!! It seems counterintuitive but changing the fluid on a tranny with this many miles can be the death knell. I have seen it many times but if you got that many miles out of it was on deaths door anyway. If you are really attached to it don't even think about a junk yard tranny, they will be just a little less worn out that the original in you car now. FYI it's going to be at least 2G's to have it rebuilt.

I have the same problem with my harrier 3000cc car. We have changed the idling sensor, airflow sensor. air filter, we have had the throttle checked, spark plugs, wiring and nothing works. The smell you are getting could be from your gear box, have it checked out early and if the gear shift is noticeable then you will need a gearbox specialist to open it and change the clutch plates. Good luck.

Yes I think you are. Try Firestone or Midas. Firestone changes out ALL of the fluid and not just 25%. 167K miles may be a lot to some people but it is not to a car taken good care of. Remember Cadillac is top of the line for USA vehicles and has higher tolerances.

If you have a lot of miles on your van , 100,000 or more , have the transmission serviced. But before you do that , check the vacuum line to the modulator valve for leaks or breaks In the vacuum line .

Hard to shift

You may have what is called a syncronizer problem which is basically a transmission rip down and inspection, when the syncros go they create havoc inside the gear box making shifting extremely difficult in these gear ranges.
The other thing that also should be inspected at the same time the transmission is looked at is the clutch assembly, clutches should last long times depending on how each vehicle is driven, generally a clutch can be worn out in as little as 30,000 miles if it is pushed hard as oppossed to a car being babied and lasting 100,000 miles or more.

That is a rip off.

A new and more recent car would be better off.

Sell this one and get a replacement instead of spending $8200 for repairs which will not likely end there.

Let the dealer sell it off or trade it in for you.

Transmission sometimes shifts hard into next gear.

I would check the transmission and engine mounts but also it may be time for a transmission fluid change. It has a service interval just like oil. 50000 miles

beginning of transmission problems could be a clogged screen in the transmission filter..making it have to have time to warm the fluid up so it can get through the screen
