Ignition module. They get hot and shut down. After they cool they work again.

It is a possible misfire code. If it does end up being that try running a bottle or two of Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner through the car. An uncle of mine 96 Skylark had a similar issue, rough running combined with blinking CEL, I had him run a bottle of the fuel system cleaner through and problem was solved. After running the fuel system cleaner through you may want to replace the fuel filter(rear drivers side frame rail bolted to the frame with 2 quick disconnect connectors attaching the filter to the lines).

Also check for any damaged plug wires because one shorting out or broken can cause a misfire code as well.

Chevy caprice doesn't start. Turns over but, no start.

Check spark. Is this one of those with the HEI coil on top of distributor? Check the ignition module in the distributor under the cap and rotor.

P1406 is a EGR problem on the gm products, P1406 is a vent hose disconnect to the axle on the ford products. The PCM does not know where the EGR pintle is. This can cause poor running and bad idle. About the only thing that you can do is remove the EGR, clean it and carefully inspect the plug and connections on the valve its self. If that does not solve the problem then its time for a new one. Look at the wiring harness to the valve for crushed / cut wire also. It is possible to bench test the valve but it does require a good multimeter. Good luck and hope this helps. Use a carb cleaner to get the carbon out of the EGR valve

CEL IS SHOWING SOMETHING ABOUT EGR VALVE

First before you remove it make sure you have a new gasket. I would also make sure there is a new one avaliable locally if you need to purchase one. Supposedly once you have it off you can tap on the bottom and break loose any carbon build up I guess. As far as not having a vacuum pump. If you have a piece of vacuum hose you could probably attach to it and **** on it and see if the diaphram is good. Kind of crude method but should work.
New EGR might be around $75.-80. Guessing.
Hope this helps you keep it going another 185,000

Engine light says egr problems

i would still try to change your egr!!! sometimes egr test good but still they can stick open and that can cause idle problems so if you want to get your prob fix change egr valve
take that egr off and put in a new one !!!!

Have a great day

Cutting off while driving

Try checking fuel pressure again with a guage on the fuel rail. If you still notice the pressure is low and you know the fuel pump is good, the fuel pressure regulator may be bad. Sometimes you can tell by unplugging the vacuum hose from it and if you see gas that means the diaphram is leaking. If everything checks out with the fuel system a bad EGR valve or EGR valve solenoid can cause cars to sort of stall under half throttle. Good luck and keep me posted. If you found this helpful please rate this solution.
