My cadillac Eldorado 88 gave me problems starting, after a short while it would not strart at all (only would start when jump starting) I then thought it to be the starter, after changing the starter I then found out it was the ground that wasn't making good contact, I then only was able to get it to start after running the ground from the battery to the motor, why?

Does the vehicle start after sitting over night or do you need to jump start it . Is the charge light on ( batt. symbol ) at any time ? Serpentine belt good , tensioner good ? Battery cable connections good an tight and no corrosion ? Battery also good ? That is normal for battery voltage to jump up to 14 volts after starting , alternator is replenishing the battery after starting ,that draws down the battery . Going down to 11 or 12 volts when stopping and almost stalling isn't a charging system problem . You have a idle problem , IAC - idle air control valve or dirty air passage , a vacuum leak . Giving it gas and it going up to 13+ the alternator is working . Your best bet take it to a qualified repair shop and have it check .
Alot of the time, "no start" situations can be traced back to the antitheft system. Especially in GM vehicles like your Cadillac. When this system fails, the antitheft system doesn't get the proper signal from your key. This puts they car into antitheft mode and turns off the starter to prevent theft. This may be your problem and worth looking into. Here iss a link that explains all about it.
These cars did have problems with the antitheft system. When this system fails, the car "thinks" it is at risk for theft, and disables the starter. I would look into this before you change the starter. This link explains.
It could be the hood latch isn't engaging all the way and causing the hood light to stay on and create a drain on the battery. My grandfathers car (same year/make) had this issue and we used a bungy cord to keep it shut all the way and the problem is gone now.
Starter motor solinoid is stuck? or the engine is locked up. try turning the engine with a bar and a socket on the crank bolt. if it turns its an easy fix . If nor get your check book out
It Could Be The DashBoard Switch Itself Or The Light Sensor which is located Near The Bottom Of Your WindshieldOn the dashboard near your GloveBox may be blocked. There are no fuses for this as it runs directly off your Body Control Module which controls all your dash displays and interior lights.
It take two people to find out if it has sparkplug fire. If it is not getting any fuel you may pour a small amount into throttle body and see if it will start if you have spark. If you turn it over trying to start it you should see the injectors squirting fuel down into it.
If this problem just started I would try to get a jump on it. It will be easier to track down if the light just started coming on. Otherwise other problems may come into play and the mechanic will need longer to sort them out. At around 70.00hr.Cheapest fix is to try and drop in a set of plugs. Good luck.
