There are two switches on altimas one brake switch is to cancel the cruise control if you have it on your vehicle, and the other is to control shift interlock (shifter when you press on brake pedal to relase) and the lights. this switch has more than two wires to it and they are very easy to replace but study them a bit before attempting, it just takes some twisting.
you might have jumped the wrong switch. it is common for the brake switches to go out, so my advice is to replace it. don't forget to check power supply to circuit (fuses) and older models tend to short out at the bulbs because the socket puts pressure on the lead contacts on bulb and brings them together
causing a short circuit that you forever will try to find in the wiring

Dodge ram 1500 wiring diagram

Three places to look. 1) Brake lamp fuse, 2) Turn signal switch and 3) the brake pedal switch. Brake light power comes from the fuse up to the turn signal switch down to the brake lite switch on the brake pedal and then on to the light bulbs. Start by putting the 4 way flasher on. If the brake lites flash, then the bulbs are good. That eliminated the fuse too. so the problem is the other two.

No brake lights

This may sound confusing, so here goes.
Normally I would say check the turn signal switch because for decades the brake light switch power went thru the turn signal switch.
But in your case, its more complicated.
The wiring diagram looks like you have a wire from the brake switch and another from the turn signal that joins inside the right and left rear tail lamp assembly. There are also fuses in the rear fuse box including one for just the brake lights. So its possible that fuse is dead and yet the turn signals would work.
You may have to get a book with the wiring diagrams to trace the circuits.

Brake light wont light up when brake pedal is pressed

Sounds like a brake lamp switch or fuse. Check all fuses electrically, with a test probe you can purchase from any auto parts store. Go through each fuse with the probe touching the end or tip of the fuse after clipping the lead on the probe to a good ground. If the probe lights up at both ends of the fuse, the fuse is sound, if it only lights up at one end then replace that fuse and if the probe does not light up at all, that fuse is not active so turn on the ignition but dont start the motor. The brake lamp switch is attached to the brake pedal. It may have a single wire or several. All the switch does is connect the brake lamp circuit to an active supply rail so, The switch should have one active wire and the other wire should become active when the pedal is pressed. If it does not, replace the switch. If it does, then you may have two blown bulbs in the rear lamps or a damaged wiring harness to the rear lamps and you should seek the advice of a qualified person. Start with the fuses, then the switch, then the bulbs..and remember, you may have more then one fuse panel in the vehicle so check under the hood too..

96 suburban brake ligh don't work

you may have to change the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal stop by your local GM dealership in the parts department and they be able to print you off pictures and diagrams but check on the part at your local part store because it maybe cheaper wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.

Need a wiring diagram for a chevy s10. brake

your power starts at the brake light fuse, check with a test light, then proceed to stop light switch on brake pedal under dash, one wire will be hot when when you check it with your test light, the other won't be until you press down the brake pedal then the power flows through to the second wire,if no power to second wire replace switch,if you have power remove tail light bulbs and check for power in side socket.

check the wire harness that runs from inside the trunk on the drivers side follow it down to the tail light and make shure the wires are not damaged or unplugged remove cover on the drivers side inspect the bulbs the holders and the wires and dont forgt to retighten all grounds that you find on your travels this should get the rear tail lights working also check the brake pedal switch up on the metal part of the brake pedal arm follow it up tp the brake pedal switch and acuate the switch by hand and check the wire voltage coming in and going out when pressing the brake pedal ok give this a shot

My break lights dont work!!

Make sure that your hazard switch is all the way OFF I have seen this problem. But here power comes in the brake light switch from the fuse, when you press on the brake it closes and powers the other wire that goes up into the steering column into the turn signal switch and then out to the brake lights I can send you a wiring diagram if you send me your email to fixincars@yahoo.com
