I have a 1990 vw cabriolet that won't start. It ran out of gas, I put 5 gallons in, turns over but... it won't start. I tested both fuel pumps for voltage and it's there, I can feel and hear them click but no fuel to the injectors. I can start it by spraying starting fluid in the air cleaner. Could it be as simple as the fuel filter??? Oh I also changed the wires and plugs.

You cooked the fuel pump. never drive under 1/4 tank of gas. the pump sits in the fuel to cool it. no fuel = no cooling. your lucky the pump is easy to get to in your car. lift up carpet in trunk and you will see a black circle plate take out the screws and under plate is the pump. unscrew the big black ring and pull it out. dont forget to unhook the lines and wires. most cars you need to remove fuel tank to do this.

When u turn the ignition on the fuel pump should make a hum sound until the fuel system is primed then it will stop until the engine is turning over to run.If u ran it out of gas the pump mybe burn't up The liquid (gas) in the tank keeps the pump cool.

When it ran out of fuel there may have been damage to the fuel lines. I would suggest getting it looked at by a mechanic to be safe

Why won't my car stay running after it ran out of gas

Most newer cars are very sensitive to being ran low on gas. The fuel pump is in the tank and relies on fuel to cool it down. Your fuel pump is now probably not pumping the required pressure for the fuel injection system to work properly (or at all).

How do you bleed the fuel lines on 2000 vw jetta vr6

The system is self bleeding, just hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank it over for 5 seconds at a time until it starts. Make sure you have at least 3 gallons in the tank to properly prime the fuel pump.

2002 Ford Explorer ran out of gas put gas in and won't restart. replaced fuel pump and fuel filter still won't start. Cranks but won't start

Most Fords have a fuel reset button. When you ran out of gas you tripped the circuit. Most of the time the button will be on the passenger side by the kick panel. The exact location should be in your owners manual or your local library or auto parts store will have a copy of one for your specific vehicle.

The 1990 XJ6 has been sitting for the last 2 years and now won't start. The engine turns over fine. The dash gages don't seem to operate. I filled the gas tank with 5 gallons of premium gas. HELP!!!

I wish I could give you an instant fix, but I can't. Do you have spark? If so then its either your fuel pump or the CPS, crank position sensor. If no spark then it could be your coil.

1987 vw cabriolet idles up and down. When you accelerate it bogs. If you come off gas pedal a little rpms pick up. Has new distributor, coil, fuel pump, plugs and wires. Also cold start vavle replaced....

At that point, I think the best thing to do would be having the carburetor taken off, take it apart, put it in some gunk remover (Carburetor Cleaner sold in 1 gallon barrels), then wirebrush it all out, make sure all the jets are clean, buy a carburetor repair kit, and put it all back together with new seals. At how old your car is, it would probably be best for it. On the cheap side, all that needs to be done is having the carburetor's throttle accelerator pump fixed (Squirter). A shop should be able to do all this, but it's not hard, either.

I have a 1990 VW Cabriolet that ran out of gas, put 5 gallons (gas) in it and now it wont start, turns over but wont fire

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. You probably need to prime the engine. You need to put a little gas into the intake and then try starting it. Check to see if you have a fuel reset button. It may be located in the glove box. If you prime the gas, it should start. You might have to do this a few times before it will catch. If it doesn't, there might be a chance that you have another issue. Make sure you can hear your fuel pump kicking on when you first turn the key. Do this first. Turn the key on for 10 seconds and turn it off for 10 seconds. Do this 5 times and then try to start it. Repeat the process if you have to. This will prime the fuel pump.

RAN OUT OF GAS PUT 2 GALLONS IN TURNS OVER HOWEVER IT WONT START

Yes. All cars have fuel filters. The most common location is under the chassis by the fuel filler. Look for a little plastic cylinder with a pair of hoses going to it.
