The transmission service is performed by lifting the vehicle in order to get access to the transmission pan. Remove all the bolts that hold the pan in place and the fluid will come out when the pan is being lowerd. From there the filter is accesible and should be changed by simply pulling it downward. The new one is installed by pushing it firmly in place where the old one once was. Clean the pan of the transmission completely including the magnet. place new gasket around the pan and reinstall all the pan bolts. be carefull not to over tighten the pan bolts as it can damage the new gasket the you have put on. next, lower the vehicle and add fluid through the dipstick tube located in the engine compartment. It's best to add 4 quarts then start the vehicle and check the level. If more is needed, add accordingly. Macs Transmissions 281-394-4951 [email protected] There is none. To change the fluid you need to remove the cover - undo one end first to limit the mess - but yes, it's messy. AnswerBest To Have A Good Transmission Shop Do This. Sometimes You Can Miss Alighn The Filter On Some Tranmissions And They Will Go Out. About Changing The Fluid, Even If You Could It Wouldn`t Do The Job Without a New Filter. Good Luck AnswerThere is an excellent write-up on this procedure relating to a Taurus - the steps are the same. See "Related Questions" below for more
NOTE: dropping the pan alone will NOT change ALL the fluids - specifically the fluid that is in the torque converter. That would require a shop to perform a full fluid change with their specialized equipment. Answerdrop the pan, replace filter, clean pan replace gasket torq bolts to spec. refill to warm line on stick Rick ASE L-1 Master TransMichigan.com AnswerRemove the pan and then remove the filter on the valve body. Clean the pan and gasket surfaces on pan & trany. Install new filter and pan gasket and gently tighten bolts. Caution, if overtightened it will leak!!! Remember how tight they were when you removed them or get a spec & torque them. Refill the trany through the filler tube, DON'T overfill it or it may not shift properly. To check the fluid level the vehicle needs to be running in park and on a level surface. If you do the above you will only change aprox 40% of the fluid. The torque converter, cooler & lines hold the rest and the fluid won't drain out of them. I suggest you take it to a shop that has a trany FLUSHING machine and will exchange 100% of the fluid and do the filter & gasket at the same time. Add a bottle of seal conditioner when done. With the price of a new trany this should be done every 80,000 kilometers (50-60,000 miles) or check your owners manual for service intervals. Not a lot of shops have this machine so be selective. Might cost up to $200-250.00 for this service to get it done properly but a proper trany rebuild can be $1500-3000.00 or more in some cases on some vehicles. Flushing the fluid?
But the system should be flushed. Just dropping the pan and draining the oil and changing the filter on your transmission leaves all the used fluid still in torque converter. Have the system evacuated and totally replacing ALL the fluid is a much better approach. It will cost you more but if you plan on keeping the Ford, it's a worthwhile investment.
Although this is may not work depending on transmission wear and tear, you will need to do this if you plan to replace transmission any way. Replace the damaged hose. Next I would get a transmission filter kit. This is a simple kit that is sold at part stores and includes filter and gasket. You will need to buy transmission fluid and a gasket sealant. Jack up the vehicle, drain the transmission fluid by loosening the transmission pan, if you need help finding this check the gasket shape you purchased. The pan will most likely be stuck a little from the previous gasket sealant. Carefully pry it apart with a flat head screwdriver or pry bar, transmission fluid will go when pan is dropped, so, be careful in placement of pan and how much you loosen all bolts. when pan is dropped check for metal shavings inside. If you have none things are looking good. Remove filter most oftenly attached with phillips head screws. Check this filter for debris and metal. If you do not spot anything serious by now, replace using new filter. Ensure you have a clean surface for the new gasket after removal of old gasket. Once you have this done, add a thin layer of sealant to pan and place gasket on top of it. Apply another thin layer of sealant to the other side of gasket and reinstall to transmission using correct tightening sequence and torque. These bolts do not need to be overly tight. Most leaks happen from overtightening bolts to pan. Usually a lil over hand tight is fine, but, check with you parts store. Add fluids to proper level and then you will be able to test the transmission out. I know it sounds like alot, but, it cheaper than buying a new transmission if you don't have to.
first you need to get a pair of safety glasses to protect eyes from cleaner. then you need 12.6 pts or 6.5 to 7 quarts of transmission fluid+ filter.you also need a drain pan to catch transmission fluid.you need a 3/8 ratchette and socket set.you need some paper towel and maybe1 or 2 cans of brake cleaner.now you want to safely raise and support car on jack stands.make sure you are on solid level ground.put drain pan under transmission to catch fluid.take ratchette wrench start removing tranny pan front and side bolts.loosen rear bolts one turn let the pan drain.when all tranny fluid drain out of pan. then remove pan clean it good with brake cleaner.remove all traces of old gasket. from pan then dry with paper towel..then you remove tranny filter.becareful not to damage anythingthen put in your new tranny filter then.wipe and carefully clean around gasket area on transmission with paper towel.make sure there is no traces of olds gasket material on tranny area where tranny pan gasket seals.now get new gasket align its with tranny pan holes.you might want to buy a gasket adhesive.just put on some to hold gasket in place when you install it to transmission.besure to clean all tranny pan bolts real good with brake cleaner. then dry them off real good.because some transmission you have to put a little rtv sealant on bolts.to keep them from leaking.now once you get bolt holesand gasket on transmission pan line up.all tranny pans bolts with a little rtv silicone on threads and on bolts head where they meet the pan.then you transmission pan in place.make sure gasket and bolt holes line up.when putting bolts in dont tighten them until you get them all in first.when all bolts are in.then you tighten criss cross dont over tighten them. torque them to 90 inch pounds .when all is done .starting putting tranny fluid in.and check for leaks.start the engine up let it idle for few minutes if you see no leaks lower car down to ground.then move transmission gear selector through each range and back to park.make sure tranny fluid level correct before driving car. WARNING IF YOUR CAR DONT HAVE THE TRANSMISSION DIP STICK.AND HAVE A FILL CAP INSTEAD THE DEALERSHIP HAS TO CHANGE FLUID.BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO RAISE CAR ON LIFT TO CHECK FLUID LEVEL.BECAUSE CAR HAS TO BE RAISE UP LEVEL THEN A DRIP PLUG IS MOVED TO CHECK TRANNY FLUID LEVEL.
2001 Ford Explorer, depending on the engine option, will have either a 4R70W or 5R55E model transmission.Neither trans has a drain or fill plug in the pan or case.Changing the fluid is achieved either by removing all the pan bolts, removing the pan and fluid, then reinstalling and adding fluid through the filler tube,or by a shop that has a total flush machine that usually hooks into the cooler lines.I also change the filter on both transmissions as part of the fluid service. The 4R70W trans has a gasket that is reuseable for the life of the vehicle. The 5R55E pan requires a new gasket if dropping the pan.
in my opinion if the car is changing gears fine then just fix the gasket and seals when you can if its changing fine then they are trying to rip you off as renewing the seals and gasket will fix your leak and if its slipping gears it could last a day it could last a year so if its slipping yes its important to replace it
