96 nissan pathfinder 4wd AT. Loud grinding noise(Rocks or loose bolt) when in park or neutral. Gears 1, 2, and drive are fine. Any ideas. Michael

sounds as if your transfer case is gonna have to be inspected via inspection port for a worn or bent "finger" this is the thing that moves gears on shaft when pushed by 2wd/4wd handle/solinoid or a worn or broken pin "the thing gears slide back n forth on" this usually occurs after the vehicle has recieved a hard Jolt as in a minor fender bender , or your out crushing rocks on the trails all day and might have been just a little too hard on it on that last hill MAybe ? they just usually don\'t break or bend without a reason known to driver

Could be your neutral safety switch is bad.

You have to be in park or be in drive or moving slowly to
engage 4 wd

You can not have the trans in neutral to use 4wd or have the
transfer in neutral to shift trans

Either combo you grind gears in trans or transfer

Sounds like the fluid coupler inside the transfer case failed. In my opinion using those is a great idea
on paper but they just do not last as well as the older direct engagement units used in Cherokees and wranglers. I own many Jeeps and will not have a GC for that one reason.
The transfer case needs to be removed and rebuilt. There is no external repair or temporary fix.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your transfer case is probably pouched. That grinding noise is the gears grinding up in there. Break out the wallet and roll up your sleeves. If its quiet while driving in 2 more than likely thats it. With the vehicle off and in park, get underneath and turn the shaft by the transfer case, does it feel like it sounds, running on rocks? Thats all those expensive gears turning into shavings.

Sounds like broken trans input shaft.

i would say the fine grinding was when you put it in park the output shaft was turning and the parking paw was trying to engage into park then the paw engaged into park but you say it rolled i am thinking that your problem is in the transfercase

sound like internal problem like tranny oil pump gear or torque converter noises.
