Question about 2002 Jeep Liberty

2 Answers

My 2003 Jeep Liberty 6 cylinder is overheating. I have replacedthe thermostat and that helped a little, but it still persists to overheat . It does this intermitently. I can drive it with the AC on for up to one hour and then it startes creeping up in temperature. If I put on the heater for a while, it will cool down to normal after about 5 or 10 minutes and then I can put the AC on again - for a while. I have bled the system and I do not think there are any air pockets. Both the dealer's service dept. and two auto parts stores do not think it is the water pump as it works most of the time and I ahve no leaks. Help! It is driving me crazy.

My 2002 Liberty suddenly overheated dramatically in the mountains. It was boiling! We pulled over, waited, ran the heater and it came down, but would go back up right away. Took it to the dealer and he replaced the thermostat $300, and next day...still overheating! Help!

My 2003 Liberty was overheating also, I found my radiator had a small, barely visible crack in it. I bought a new radiator from 1-800-radiators, They were $100 cheaper than autozone and it was OEM quality. I changed the thermostat and radiatior cap while I was in the cooling system. FIXED . Also have you checked your oil? is it milky? If it is you may have internal problems. Also check your overflow bottle to see if it is blowing bubbles out of it? If so you may have head gasket problems, craked head, or block.

My liberty uses an electric fan, have you seen if it is coming on? The radiator that I replaced also had blockage in it and it was full of sludge. Has your cooling system been pressure checked?

My roommate's fan clutch was bad, I could stop it with my finger. Although you should test it with a rolled up newspaper. Bought another from my local parts store for $60 and replaced it myself.

2003 jeep liberty suddenly got hot and antifreeze was every where what is wrong?

It overheated.
You'll need to figure out if it is a faulty thermostat, water pump, cooling fan, or other causes.

My 3.7 liter 6 V Jeep Liberty (2003) runs hot very quickly. If I speed it cools down but if I am idle or in slow traffic it overheats! The radiator and hoses seem to be fine. There are no apparent leaks...

Chek in this order:

1- The water level in the auxiliary deposit.
2- the ventilator, some one have in the center a viscosity licuit that become hard when the temperature increase, if not, the air flow slowly and the water increase the temperature.
3- the valve, this is locate in the return tube from the radiator to the motor, this one regulate the pass of water to maintain the temperature stable.

I hope this help you.

2003 3.7L Liberty Jeep overheated - no leaks in

thermostats are fairly reliable considering how cheap and simple they are.
They can and do sometimes fail (nothing is perfect). the cause is pretty much that they just stop working, usually because the internal movable part jams.
I believe a company called robertshaw makes what they claim is a "lifetime" thermostat...I doubt if it actually will last that long but may be a slightly better unit to use as a replacement.
I would use the opportunity to check the fan(s) to make sure they are working properly, that the radiator is not externally or internally obstructed and to replace your coolant.
if the overheat condition persists, check (or have checked) to make sure that there are no hydrocarbons in the radiator (indicates a cylinder head gasket leak) If your gasket has failed, it needs immediate service or it will cause serious secondary damage to the engine.

There are lots of reasons for a car to over heat. To say why in particular in your case is a vague question and vague answer.

If you are not capable of working on the vehicle and diagnosing it you probably should take it to a shop.

The following are possible reasons for your Jeep overheating:
1. Bad radiator fan/clutch
2. Clogged radiator.
3. Low antifreeze level
4. Waterpump leaking
5. Faulty Radiator Fan Relay
6. Failed Thermostat
7. Bad coolant temp sensor
8. Clogged antifreeze resovoir tube
9. The list goes on and on....

It's best to get it diagnosed by a professional
