Question about 1996 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

I have a 1996 sunfire 2.2L. first all my fluid and battery lights came on and my tach stopped working. thought it was just a wiring problem or the famous sunfire computer. swapped out the computer same problem. went out in the morning moved the car to the other side of the driveway ran fine. later that day went out to go to work and it starts idles for about 2 seconds then dies out. if i use and throttle it just gets the rpms to about 3,000 and it dies out again. i've replaced spark plugs and wires, i've tried a remanufactured computer. checked the fuses. what else should i be checking?

I would without a doubt check the fue pressure on this vehicle. The schrader valve is located on the p.side of the fuel rail. If low, check the fuel filter. For the price I personally would change the filter just for the piece of mind. On the side of that the fuel was going into the engine, blow air through onto a clean rag to see what debris was in the filter.

Any chance the check engine light is on ?
You are correct in thinking the starting fluid would point to a lack of fuel, but its also possible the engine would start without it once something cools off a bit. Even a wiring harness problem could come and go.
If the idle air control valve failed, it would stall at stops but should start if you push on the gas pedal to open the throttle.
What happens if you shift to neutral when coming to a stop ?
It really sounds like an electrical component getting hot and failing, then coming back to life once it cools off.

2003 Pontiac Sunfire died on me, how/why?

If you hear a loud clank when you try to start it, but nothing turns, that is the starter trying to turn the engine, but the engine is locked up. If the timing chain/belt jumped, the engine would still spin.

1999 Pontiac Sunfire won't even turn over, but the

The radio will work even with a dying or discharged battery.

First, be sure to check all of your fuses in the engine compartment.

A full battery will keep the headlights bright with the engine off. With a dying or discharged battery, the headlights will be noticeably dim.

When you turn the key to crank the engine, does the starter try to turn or make a fast clicking? If so, the battery if low or dying. If it makes a slow click then stops, then it's REALLY dying.

If you don't have a battery charger, go to Walmart and get some jumper cables. Hook up a friend's car to yours. If it starts, then the battery was low, either from a bad battery or a bad alternator.

If it doesn't, you have electrical problems, possibly a bad starter or starter solenoid.
