Ok so if the oil like was flickering it probably is a bad sensor or just a little low on oil. (make sure to keep your car full of oil with refills all the time if its leaking, very important). but i dont think it siezed up. a screeching noise then no power? You probably broke a alternator or accessory belt. did the battery light come on and did you loose power steering? thats what it is, a different issue. replacing belts is pretty inexpensive, no reason to get rid of the car.
Testimonial: "Kormega answered very quickly. He seems very knowledgable. With little information, he has offered many positive solutions, making me feel hopeful."
No, no battery light.
Alternator is new, as is battery. Maybe I just have two problems at the same time. Yes I check the oil and fill every week. I check it more often, but fill it a little less since the leak is slow. Maybe. I just had the drive belts replaced. Power steering was ok until the car died. The oil light came on solid, but less than 5 seconds before the car died going up the hill.
im still pretty certain that its probably a drive belt or a component on the belt (water pump, pulley tensioner or alternator that broke and frooze), just because of the screetching noise. maybe it was installed too tightley or loosely. open the hood a check the belts at the front of the engine ( left side of engine compartment). also check for a major increase in leaking oil or coolant. oil pressure controls a lot of actuators.
thanks for the nice testimonial! i really appreciate it! im about to sign off and retire to bed. i hope the best for you and your car. i will check your post in the morning to further help you if needed. don't worry about buying a new car yet. if its turning over at all, it didn't siezed up
My worst fears were true. When my mechanic came to the house and tried to start it, it started right up, but with a loud knocking noise in the engine. He says the high pitched sound may have been belts. The low oil pressure is because of the engine, not the pump. It has turned out to be a 1500 dollar repair. I will get the car back in a week. He's even paying for the tow.
So no the engine had not siezed up, but it is shot nonetheless...
