remove horn cover, screws from backside of steering wheel, unplug wire to cover for the horn. loosen and remove 7/8" or 22mm nut from center. using steering wheel puller remove steering wheel. using steering wheel lock spring compressor tool compress spring and remove external snap ring. or have friend press down on cogged black plastic ring and remove snapring from shaft. dont allow spring to make things fly. now remove the three phillips headed screws and the fourth that hold turn signal lever, to the turn signal assesembly and wiggling wires from bottom end of steering column and pulling up on turn signal plastic assesembly pull until out of way. using a t20 i believe torx, six point star bit, to remove the tumbler assesembly. now reachin with a neetle nose pliers and turn. all done. and the install new tumbler. hope your not stealing it. or you can just remove plastic pannel under steering column and the two 14mm nuts holding steering column up. let it rest upon seat. remove the ingition switch with a 7 mm socket. where the rod use to connect on the bottom side of ignition switch, slide slider away to start. but this will not disengage the steering wheel lock, depending if its in the lock position or not would depend on which way i would go. if not in locked position use 2nd option just to move it. but either way to replace ignition lock cylinder, where key goes, use first method

common problem. key tumbler or key bad. try different key. if not spraw w-d 40 lightly into key tumbler. tap lighly on end of key with hammer while turning key. if key turns, do not put key in lock position until someone replaces key tumbler. cheaper to repair if key is unlocked

Durango can't turn ignition

First thing make sure it isnt just the steering wheel lock, move the steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn key. I that doesnt work it is most likely the key and tumbler. Over time it is normal to experience wear. The solution is to replace the key and tumbler in the steering column.

The key will not turn the ignition on with out working the steering wheel back an forth

Go to a dealer and ask for a new lock cylinder to replace yours. If you have not done this before you may be well advised to pay a dealer to have them match the tumblers to your car keys and install it. You can find videos of folks replacing lock cylinders on youtube. There is also an arm which connects the ignition to the steering column which could need replacing, you will have to weigh the cost of this versus the value of the vehicle.

Key stuck in ignition -- cannot turn on or off. Can an ignition switch cause the tumbler to lock up? Or does the ignition tumbler need to be replaced? If the ignition tumbler needs to be replaced, how...

lets start simple.get a can of silacone spray oil and spray into the switch and keep moving key and you will find this will reliese the key,if you need to remove the ign switch dont panic as its a simple enough job.Forget about steering wheel and whatever, simply remove the outer plastic cover then this exposes the switch at the back of switch is a plug with wires pull it away ,then below the key you should see a tiny screw undo, and make sure the steering lock is not under pressure,ie steering wheel free, when trying to remove switch move steering wheel back/forward and switch should pull out.good luck.adrian,,,,

The key will not turn in the ignition. The

you have bent tumblers inside the lock cylinder. A replacement will be needed for this repair. The old one is unuseable since the tumblers are stuck inside and the key does not turn it no longer

Cant get key switch out of housing, on a 1974 chevy pick up.Trere are no screws or clips visible.

If you mean remove the ignition tumbler from the steering column, you will have to remove the steering wheel and lock plate, then you will need to remove the turn signal lever and screws, and then pull the turn signal switch up and out of the way, you should then be able to see the housing for the ignition tumbler down in the steering column. Look at the tumbler housing and there should be a small slot towards the end of the housing that you can put a small standard screwdriver into and depress a locking latch that is built into the tumbler. When this latch is depressed you will be able to pull the ignition tumbler straight out of the column.

95 suburban, ignition locks, can't turn key,

Remove the lower steering column cover and check to see if the rod from the ign. lock and tumbler to the ignition switch is binding up. If it's ok, you're problem may be the bearing under the steering wheel being broken.

Ignition Lock Cylinder REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Functional Lock The following procedure applies to vehicles that have functional lock cylinders. Such cylinders either have a key available or known key numbers from which a key can be made.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Turn the lock cylinder key to the RUN position.
  3. Using a 1⁄8 in. (3mm) diameter wire pin or a small drift, depress the lock cylinder retaining pin through the access hole in the upper steering column shroud (under the ignition lock cylinder) while pulling out on the lock cylinder. Remove the lock cylinder from the column. .
