How to adjust idle?

hot engine ?, cold or both,, EFI runs in 3 modes, cold ,warm and hot.

name it.

which engine option (displacement)??????

there is no idle adjust, that is the PCMs, job 100%, all the time.

Carbs are gone.

here is rule one for all EFI.

idle is the last thing to work correctly.

anything the causes a gross imbalance of engine power to engine load, under idle will cause , idle controls to fail.

low idling causes. (over 50 but, here ar basics)

1: AFR (air fuel mixture too lean) usually surges. (clogged or leaking injectors. or fuel pressure way to high)

2: air leaks, cause racing, so not that. (speed density car ,if is)

3: egr stuck open. low idle and misfire.

4: ISC stuck closed (IAC electric)

5: cam belt slipped, timing retarded, compression at 1/2 spec, and well, valve will bend soon....

6: CEL glowing running? can be in limphome, limp cancels Idle controls (in may cases) RTM read the FSM on DTCs.

if fails hot?, is hot = 180F temp or more? "thermometer time"

if not, the PCM goes , quite nuts.

2001 ford escort zx2 changed o2 sensors still runs rough in idle. when i turn ac on it helps. any ideals what the problem could be?

I would suspect a vacuum leak to be causing the rough idle. When you turn the A/C on the idle control solenoid raises the RPM's in order to compensate for the added load to the engine. Take a can of WD-40 or Carb cleaner and spray it around the intake manifold and any accessible vacuum lines, when the spray comes across a vacuum leak the engine idle will smooth out and usually increase in speed. Once this is done replace or reconnect whatever the fault may have been.

My 99 buick lesabre runs hot when the a/c is on and i'm sitting idle, what is the problem

thermostat may be at fault or engine doesn't lift idle to compensate for extra load of A/C

I have a very old city golf, an i fused the engine. We have just put a new engine in but the car wont idol. My mechanic cant seem to find what is wrong? He has said something about the carburetor but cant...

carb ?? oldie for sure and the problem here is your mechanic is no doubt very good but doesnt have the experiance with old stuff ,what you need to do here is take the carb off and a sheet of newspaper on the kitchen table and clean it out paying special attention to the idle adjustment screw on the side ,clean it up then set screw to 1/ half turns out .Now on these carbs looking from the top are two jets that can be removed ,one is the idle jet and the other is the compensating jet ,the other main jet is fixed ,under the compensating jet is another jet as well and what happens is when you take the engine out and turn it over the muck inside the carb moves and it blocks the jets up ,just give it a good clean and it should be fine the CO2 should be set to less than 2% using a calibrating machine but this is only for the test station afterwards set it to optimum where engine sonds right .

Does not idle when hot

Is it a 2002 or 1989????

If you have a carb then it's the choke is stuck in the on position and it's running too rich. If it's fuel injected then it may be a bad idle air control valve.

When started idels high about 2000 rpm then drops when hot cold ?

the iac probably has carbon built up around it this controls the idle speed try cleaning it first,if not it could be a bad iac or a vaccum leak that the iac takes some time to compensate for to control idle.

1988 2.2 dodge omni, when started revs really high. What could be wrong?

If you are still using the carb engine check the idle up, there is the carb's version of a fast idle control. Some carbs would have a lever that pushes the throttle a little higher during start up. There is a screw there that you can adjust.

If it is an EFI engine, if you are experiencing very cold temperature, your car maybe compensating.
