I did not even look to a shop when re-
placing my head gasket. Hourly labor
rates can go anywhere from $60 to
$100 or more. The job ticket for this
from the All Data service was 8 hours.

If you have the tools, its a weekend job
at home and not too difficult.

How do I replace valve cover gaskets?

What type of engine v8 or v6? There are no gaskets on the valve cover . A silicone sealant is applied in a bead around the cover flange allowed to slightly cure and evenly bolted down to the head. If you do this be certain to remove all old sealant from the flange. Clean the flange but do not scrape or bend. You must get the proper high temperature "make a gasket "sealant especially made for valve cover gaskets. Follow the directions exactly

if the coolant level is going down you may have an intake or head gasket leaking coolant into the cylinders pressure test the coolant system

96 Firebird, Replaced water pump, fuel pump - Now blows head gasket.

Get yourself another mechanic. This guy is not doing his job. It shouldn't cost $1600 to change a water pump and fuel pump. No proper mechanic would remove a thermostat to replace the O-ring and put the old thermstat back in. It wouldn't be uncommon for the coolant level to drop after changing the thermostat. It probably only needs to be topped up. No, the motor doesn't have to come out to replace the head gasket and I don't see it costing $2500. Before you spend any more money there, take the car somewhere else and get another opinion. I bet that if you fill up the coolant bottle for 2 0r 3 days it will stop losing coolant. Hope this helps.

1999 pontiac firebird blowing gray smoke drives fine short distance but will not restart after parked was low on oil and had just had recent oil change and no noticeable oil puddles....master air flow...

Sounds to me like a cracked head and/or a blown head gasket. Is the car low on water in the radiator and if you live in an area that is cold do you have enough antifreeze in the car.

My car is 1995PONTIAC Firebird 3.4L V6, burning oil is now very serious, to the number fluctuated greatly speed up the sound of the engine can not VIN: 2G2FS22SXS2215261

your valves are probably sticking many firebirds have had problems with the heads on the vehicles.. example my 91 firebird burned oil for over a year and a half before a head gasket blew out and consequently cracked one of the heads.. but now im jus down to getting past old vats security systems.. the heads on the vehicle are expensive, so take care of them, replacing the valves may be kinda expensive but is cheaper than hole heads.. also check for any gasket leaks or oil near the valve covers, could be a head gasket.. head, valve cover gasket, valve cover, oil rings a generalized area of where the oil is coming from would be helpful
