Jeep keeps dieing intermittently, sometime while running and sometimes while stopped at lights. Try to turn it on and will get a clicking sound. After about 5-10 minutes it will start back up. Had it to a mechanic and they couldn't find anything, replaced the cable harness but it didn't fix the problem. Any ideas?
Same thing happened with my 99.Took it to Auto Zone the codes came back faulty gas cap, O2 sensor and another thing.Replaced all that stuff kept doing it,finally had to take it to a shop were they read a code.Was the crankshaft sensor.$230 parts and labor.Get a book and save money.Also turn your key on "dont start" 3 times wait till odometer reading comes on, the 3rd time it will tell you a code but only if check engine light is on.
I had a problem with my Jeep doing the same thing. It turned out to be the Crank shaft senor. It would just turn off even on the highway at 60mph.
If you can change it yourself you will save a lot of money.

cj2176 is correct, we need a lttle more info. Sounds like it will need a new fuel pump or something related to it. Since it starts on starting fluid it has compression and air and spark, just no fuel. Fuel pumps can just stop working while driving, and if not working obviously will not start. No caodes will be set for a fuel pump not working. If it cranks but does not start have someone pound on the bottom of the fuel tank with a fist or small rubber mallet lightly (don't damage the tamk) while your cranking the engine. If it starts, the fuel pump module in the tank is bad.
sometimes the actual sockets go bad where you plug your bulbs into dust water ect gets in and sometimes its just faulty.i know im a tech for chrysler jeep and dodge but they are not cheap if you have a test light use it and touch the inside where the bulb goes if there is power then its not that.could also have a short.
It sure sounds like a starter solenoid issue, they act just like that, had exactly the same concern on my car, no crank just clicks under hood, new starter solenoid contacts cured the problem. I don't know if your solenoid is rebuild-able or not, I think it is a Japanese starter so most likely it is.
