I have a pickup that this happened with. I just had to look underneath, find the dangling shifter linkage and plug it back in. Make sure the hardware is there and doesn't look stretched.
Good luck!

I have a 1987 Mazda B2000 pick up. My shifter will not fit back on my newly re-built transmission. Do any other shifters work with this model as I am unable to locate an original for replacement.

I'm sure you have checked the shifter and shifter spring,,...Shifters can be rebuilt also....Make sure your clutch linkage is properly adjusted...The clutch is non adjustable...They may have got air in the hydraulic lines while removing and installing...This would give you a spongy pedal ...Most shifters in order to put it in reverse you push over and up or over and down......if shifter is loose and wobbly it won't have enough force to push the reverse shift rod....However if shifter is in great shape it sounds like the reverse shift rod could be hanging up and not sliding the shift fork...It could be the rebuilders fault......Reverse gear is the largest gear in the transmission and it is located at the back of TRANS which means it will require more force to put in reverse.......I would take it back to rebuilders shop and tell them something isn't right with going to reverse gear...if you wait too long they will think it is something you may have done by incorrect shifting.....

2001 f350 diesel shift lever is loose

First . take off your panel that covers the fuse panel by your knees. put your head up under the dash and look for the shift linkage. some times the screws that hold the plate on where the linkage attaches break off. second things that go bad are the two plasic bushing that the shifter rod is held down by get worn out. Everything you need is a dealer only Item. If you get into and need help. Call me at 570-878-5222 Its a real easy fix if you know what your doing. 2001 f350 v10 automatic transmission will not engage gears

Hi Brent,

No gears at all is not a good sign. About the only things that can cause all the gears to go out at the same time is either the transmission has a severe fluid leak and there is no fluid left to engage the clutches or you have something broken like an input shaft.

If your truck is a 4X4 make sure there is not something silly like the transfer case being in neutral.

Otherwise, check your fluid level. If it is really low, then you need to find out why. If it is not low, look at the color of the fluid and smell the fluid. Good fluid should be pink or red. Bad fluid will be dark brown and will have a burnt smell to it.

If the fluid looks and smells bad, then it is probably time for a transmission overhaul.

This is just a guess but the whistling sound you desribe suggests a vacuum leak, such as a split line.If a break is not obvious, lightly spraying the suspect line with ether with the engine running will cause the rpms to go up when you are in the area of the break.Good luck

Reverse is not where it belongs, it is between reverse and neutral

you may have a bent shifter rod under your car. can you pull the rubber boot up on shifter and see if it has not came loose from the shifter inside? you will need to remove the screws that hold the cover on. on the floorboard. if the problems not there,it's on the shifter linkage rod. the bushings in the shifter rods may have gone bad or have been jammed by erratic shifting,or just every day useage.that was solution for manual shift transmission.[this is solution for automatic transmission] your shifter cable may only out of adjustment,or your shifter cable may have stretched due to cold weather or just worn. open your hood, this will take 2 people to work together.one to see the transmission shift on top of transmission, the other to shift the transmission. apply the emergency brake, engine off, shift the gears back and forwards from drive to park. does it look like the cable or linkage has play or slop in it? if it does you can adjust it by putting the car in park and then tighten the bolt on top of the cable,on the top of the transmission. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

Tansmission all the sudden wont shift from 1st

  1. Check your Shift Cable at the Shifter, and at the Transmission. More than likely the Shift Cable came loose at the Shifter.

Can get all forward gears but can not put it into reverse gear unless the car has been warmed up for ten minutes

The seals inside your transmission are bad and leaking by and they don't start to seal until the tranny fluid warms up and swells the seals. To temporarily fix this problem you can pour some brake fluid into your transmission fluid. This will swell the seal in the transmission and it should start working again. This is only a temporary fix however, eventually you will ned to replace or rebuild your tranny. I used this method on a turbo trans 350 and got a year of service out of it that way before I had to replace the tranny. Just do not put too much brake fluid into the tranny, I would recommend one or two capfuls to start with.
