everything looked ok and the sensor has been replaced as stated in the original information.

  • paulas_13 May 01, 2011

The advice I received is exactly what I found the first time I googled p0500, the expert just copy and pasted it. I have done everything listed in his response, the last line stating "if everything looks ok replace sensor". The sensor has been replaced, that is the problem, the p0500 code came back immediatly. Please read original question for details.

A code P0500 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is not reading (functioning) properly
  • There is a broken/frayed wire leading to the vehicle speed sensor
  • The vehicle's PCM is not correctly configured for the actual tire size on the vehicle
Possible Solutions

The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

Next, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the speed sensor. The location of the sensor depends on your vehicle. The sensor could be on the rear axle, transmission, or perhaps the wheel hub (brake) assembly.

If the wiring and connectors are OK, then check the voltage at the speed sensor. Again, the exact procedure wil depend on your make and model of vehicle.

If everything looks OK, replace the sensor.

If you have replaced the sencers that means the pcm is not getting the signal. You will need to have the pcm looked at or replaced.

Sorry you did not say that you changed the PCM/main computer for the car. You only said you replaced the sensors. Please get it right befor you come to FixYa and bad mouth us experts. Did you have the PCM looked at and tested then.

The Transmission shifts very hard after the first shift. Check engine light is on as well as the Green overdrive light blinks off and on. Speed sensor was cleaned and even replaced.

Your on the right track. Have you scanned the PCM, what codes did you get? If not and you changed the vehicle speed sensor,(VSS) did you check the (OSS) output shaft speed sensor, it will cause torque converter lock up and hard shifting and that pesky OD light flashing. I have also found that clutch packs inside auto tranny's dry out. Ford and some aftermarket companies sell a fluid that will recondition the clutch packs.

Error code P0500 and speedometer and cruise control not working

Well code 500 would sure cause the problems you mentioned. If you have replaced the sensor and the problem continues, it could be something in the wiring or the gear inside the transmission.

code p 0500 is for the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) which works the speedo as well as the ratio changes
code p0720 refers to the output shaft sensor --ECM or transmission control module (TCM)
the vss reports to the tcm which reads the road speed and gear ratio and shifts the appropriate solenoid

I would drive the car (slowly, since the speedometer is inop) (lol), to an autoparts store and have the fault codes retrieved from the computer. Most autoparts stores will use a scan tool and get the fault codes at no charge. That will help narrow down the search for the pesky problem. Hope this helped.

not an oxygen sensor

vehicle speed sensor or oss is most likely cause.

Output Shaft Speed Sensor (OSS) 7H103: The output shaft speed (OSS) sensor is a magnetic pickup, located at the output shaft ring gear that sends a signal to the powertrain control module to indicate transmission output shaft speed. The powertrain control module uses this signal for torque converter clutch control, shift scheduling, used in determining EPC pressure. Symptoms: No converter engagements, harsh shifts, abnormal shift schedules. DTC: P0720, P0721 std~us~en~file=d14110a.gif~gen~ref.gif

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) 9E731: The vehicle speed sensor is a magnetic pickup that sends a signal to the powertrain control module. This VSS signal tells the PCM vehicle speed. The PCM uses this signal to modify upshift schedules. Symptoms: Shift engagement/disengagement (hunting) on grades. DTC: P0500, P0503, P1500, P1501, P1503
