The power steering fluid MB 236.3 is a slightly lowered viscosity version of ATF
Type A Suffix A - most likely the low-viscosity fluid is required
because the steering system operates with a low fluid volume (0.6 litres)
and high flow rate. When the engine is at high rpm the fluid is really
moving quickly. Dexron is a fair bit thicker that the MB 236.3 fluid - in
very cold conditions with a high engine speed there could be risk of cavitation in the pump if Dexron were used. In summary, if the car is not in a cold climate Type A fluid would be quite satisfactory for the PS, most likely Dexron also. In terms of 'anti-wear' properties, Dexron is likely to be better than the MB fluid. In a cold climate rather use the MB stuff to avoid possible viscosity-related problems.
Any Dexron spec ATF will do although Castrol was recommended originally. Mercedes also sells their own brand of power steering fluid.
